1944-2011

Monsignor José Aguirre López was called to his eternal reward on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at age 66. He left as his legacy the very heart and character of hundreds of priests and thousands of lay leaders whom he helped to form in their understanding of their faith, their dedication to service, and their love of God.

José was born on Sept. 25, 1944, to Augustina Aguirre-López and Serapio B. López in Green, just six miles from Kenedy, Texas. He was one of seven children.

José’s 40 years as a priest began when he was ordained by Archbishop Francis J. Furey at his home parish in Kenedy on April 16, 1971. He touched the people he served as a parish priest in deeply personal and profound ways. From his first assignment in Notre Dame Parish in Kerrville to his ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Cuero and St. Margaret Mary Parish in San Antonio, people were immediately drawn to Father José with trust, respect, and always love.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Octaviano López; and his sisters, Barbara DeLeon and Mary Hernandez; and two great-nephews.

José is survived by his sisters, Elvira Gonzales of Kenedy, Ilda Ensenia of Sweetwater, and Rose Irene (Dean) Morris of Radcliff, Ky.; his aunt, Beatrice Soliz of San Antonio; 15 nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces.

A visitation was held Thursday, June 2, from 3-7 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit in San Antonio followed by the wake and rosary. The visitation continued until 9 p.m.

The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in the church.

A visitation was held in Kenedy on Saturday from 8-10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. The rosary began at 10:30 a.m. with the Mass of Resurrection following at 11 a.m.

Burial took place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kenedy.

Pallbearers for services in San Antonio were the most recently ordained priests of the archdiocese, and in Kenedy, family members.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Father José A. López Scholarship Fund at Assumption Seminary, 2600 W. Woodlawn Ave., San Antonio, TX 78228.
