1923-2011

Vivian Elaine Cowan Hayes, 87, a wife, mother, and grandmother, entered into heaven on Saturday, June 4, 2011. She was born Aug. 12, 1923 in San Antonio, Texas.

A lifelong resident of San Antonio, Vivian graduated from Brackenridge High School and Trinity University. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and in the Women’s Circle and Garden Club for many years. One of her favorite activities was playing bridge, a game she and her friends learned during World War II and continued playing for more than 50 years. This story was featured in the San Antonio Express-News. Vivian was also an enthusiastic sports fan and grew up attending San Antonio Missions games. She was known later for her dedication to the San Antonio Spurs and rarely missed a game. Her knowledge of basketball and her love of the sport even earned her an appearance on a local television sports show in the 1980s.

The most important things in Vivian’s life were her church, family, and friends. She was fiercely loyal to them, and she touched the lives of everyone she met. In 1935, she met a handsome young man named Mac Hayes. They married in 1944, an enduring union of 67 years that has remained the cornerstone of their family’s lives and provided an example for those around them.

Vivian’s gracious nature never changed. She was always concerned with others’ needs. This was especially true of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She doted on them all, and their devotion to her was unwavering as well. She lived every day by her creed, “If you can’t say anything good about someone, don’t say anything at all.”

Vivian was preceded in death by her son, Terrence Robert “Terry” Hayes II; her parents, Albert Letcher and Vivian Lillith Cowan, affectionately referred to as “Toad” and “Honey”; and her brothers, Albert Letcher Cowan Jr. and Willis “Bubba” Cowan.

She is survived by her husband, Terrence Robert “Mac” Hayes; her daughter and “favorite son-in-law,” Darlene and Earl Seesengood; her grandchildren, Jeanette Hayes Puerta and husband Jose, Shannon Hayes Abel and husband Jeff, Shawn Seesengood and wife Kristi, Terrence Robert “Trey” Hayes III, Lauren Seesengood, Kathleen Seesengood, Shane Seesengood, Kayla Seesengood, and Ashley Seesengood; seven great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Bertie Hayes Ledbetter and Sandra Hayes Fuller and husband Gary; and a host of extended family and friends.

In celebration of Vivian’s long and full life, a visitation will be held on Sunday, June 12, from 5-9 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville, and at noon on Monday in St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in San Antonio.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the church.

Interment will follow in the Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio.

Pallbearers will be Gene Duelm, Robert Perez, Shawn Seesengood, Trey Hayes, Jeff Abel, and Jose Puerta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian Pro-Life; Medina Children’s Home; or Boysville of San Antonio, 8555 E. Loop 1604 North, Converse, TX 78109.

Dear Family, we are all suffering because we are losing the ones we love. But soon God will wipe out every tear from our eyes. Death will be no more, neither will mourning nor out cry nor pain be anymore (Revelation 21:4). Jesus ... More ›
