Angler catches fish of a lifetime
JoAnn Massengale, along with help from her son, John Massengale, shows off a big 42-1/2 inch Jack Crevalle she caught May 14. The fish tipped the scales at 39 pounds, and was caught while participating in the annual Babes on the Bay fishing tournament. After taking this photo, the fish was released.

During the 12th annual Babes on the Bay fishing tournament held in Rockport May 14, 75-year-old JoAnn Massengale of San Antonio enjoyed a first in her life, as she reeled in a 42-1/2 inch Jack Crevalle fish that weighed in at 39 pounds. After hooking the fish, JoAnn fought with it for one hour and 16 minutes before bringing it onboard for a photo and then releasing it.
The “Babes on the Bay” fishing tournament, created by the Aransas Bay Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) to promote women’s fishing in the Aransas area, was started to memorialize those who fell victim to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
When asked how difficult it was to reel in such a large Jack Crevalle, JoAnn stated, “It wasn’t easy. It was a very strong fish and it fought me the whole time. My WaterLoo rod was arched like never before; I thought a few times it and my line were going to break.” JoAnn added that she loves to fish -- grew up doing it -- and her family spent many weekends at the coast fishing when her sons were growing up.
“I thoroughly enjoy being out on the water and fishing with my family,” she said. “God willing, I’ll be fishing again in the same ladies tournament in 2012. Catching that big Jack Crevalle was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.”
JoAnn fished for team “All My Ladies.” Other team members were JoAnn’s daughter-in-law, Robin Massengale; and granddaughter Beverly Massengale. JoAnn’s son, John, served as the team’s fishing guide.
