Rainbow Girls brings gifts of kindness
Sydney Martin of La Vernia delivers gifts and smiles to Country Care Manor Nursing Home residents May 30.
Sydney Martin of La Vernia, member of the International Order of the Rainbow Girls Schertz Lodge No. 280, delivered handmade baskets of flowers and candy to all 85 residents of Country Care Manor Nursing Home on Memorial Day. The idea came to Sydney when her assembly was making their annual May Day Baskets the last week of April. Sydney contacted the nursing home and quickly found out she would not be able to complete 85 baskets by May 1st, the traditional day of May Day Basket giving. She decided she would present the gifts on Memorial Day. In the two and half hours she spent talking with each of the residents and giving them their baskets, you could see the joy and excitement in each resident. It’s hard to describe how many residents expressed their appreciation by commenting on how generous, caring and wonderful it felt for a 15-year-old to think and care about them. The history of May Day is to give gifts without expecting or getting anything in return and Sydney began this project with that in mind. However, Sydney received the greatest gift of all....a heart filled with joy, which showed in her smile, caring tone, tears and dedication to ensure each resident received a basket.
