Surrounded by his family, Joseph E. Gill went into the open arms of our Savior on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 9:15 a.m. in his residence in Floresville, Texas, after a short, but courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

Joe was born June 19, 1937, in Carthage, Ark., to Ray and Ruth Harrison Gill. In 1954, Joe graduated from Arkadelphia High School and in 1962 he received a Bachelor of Arts and a commission in the U.S. Army from Henderson State University. Joe went on to serve in Vietnam, received a master’s degree in health care administration from Baylor University, and retired after 23 years in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. Joe continued his work in health care as the medical administrator at the John B. Connally Correctional Unit, where he later retired. Joe was a member of the Floresville First Baptist Church, Lions Club, and a member of the Masonic order until his death.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Ray Gill; and his brother, Don Gill.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary “Pat”; and his son, Scott Gill.

A viewing was held on Monday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Floresville.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Mike Clements officiating.

Interment with full military honors followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Serving as pallbearers were Scott Burris, David Malesky, Matt McClellan, John Mills, Bob Schroeder, and Jet Thompson.

Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belford Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256; or First Baptist Church, 1116 B St., Floresville, TX 78114.
