Clarence Schievelbein, 93, of Pleasanton, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011. He was born Aug. 21, 1917, in La Vernia.
After losing his mother and baby brother, he was raised by his grandparents. They taught him many valuable lessons --one was always be honest. They also taught him to speak German, which he spoke all his life. He had resided in Pleasanton for the past 56 years.
Clarence worked on dairies in Poth, Floresville, and Pleasanton. He briefly worked in Ricks Grocery Store in Pleasanton and then as a custodian at Pleasanton High School for 25 years. He retired at the age of 80. Clarence’s hobby was wandering down dirt roads and fields in search of Indian arrowheads. He had one of the largest collections in this area. He loved to polish rocks he found. He was very much an outdoors person. For the past three months, Clarence had lived in the Retama Manor North in Pleasanton.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie Vorpahl and Ernst Schievelbein; his stepmother, Blanche McWhorter Schievelbein; his brother, Wilfred Schievelbein; his son-in-law, Nick Kolenda Jr.; and his great-grandson, Eric Popham.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosie, whom he was married to for 71 years; his daughters, Ruby Kolenda of Poth, Dorothy Slaughter of Tulsa, Okla., and Jennie Lee Popham of Pleasanton; his sons, Rodger Schievelbein and wife Lanell of San Antonio and Edward Schievelbein and wife Jessie of Pleasanton; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation was held Thursday, June 30, from 2-8 p.m. in the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton.
A funeral service was held Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Interment followed at 2 p.m. in the Post Oak Cemetery near New Berlin with the Rev. Larry Scharmann of the Pleasanton First United Methodist Church officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were Robert Kolenda, Ted Schievelbein, Stephen Slaughter, Lonnie Popham Jr., Darrin Schievelbein, and Jacob Waclawczyk.
