FORT WORTH -- Wayne Hardin Stroud, 75, of Stockdale is a recent inductee into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame 2011, in the “Trail Blazers” division. South Texas residents know Stroud for the many committees he has served on, including his 12 years as Wilson County commissioner and his involvement in horse racing.

Stroud was inducted April 9 during the 36th annual Rodeo Reunion and Induction at the River Ranch in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District.

Marjorie Shaver Murphy, Texas state director of the Miss Rodeo Texas Association and a member of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, nominated Stroud for the honor.

Murphy, of San Antonio, has known Stroud since the 1960s and said her father was very fond of Stroud.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo also was inducted, in the “Rodeo Committee” or “Event” category.

Background

Stroud gained national recognition in 1954 while competing in bareback riding at the high school rodeo in Hallettsville. His performance qualified him to advance to the national high school rodeo in Rapid City, S.D. While in Rapid City, Stroud competed in three events -- bareback riding, bull riding, and steer wrestling.

In the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, Stroud followed the rodeo circuit. With a team of steer-wrestling horses, Stroud traveled to major and amateur rodeos. He has been a member of the Southwestern Rodeo Association and the Rodeo Cowboy Association since the 1950s.

Stroud and his friend, Horace Delma Fluitt, supplied a team of horses for steer-wrestling competition. But this partnership did not last long, with the untimely death of Fluitt in 1963.

In 1964, Stroud set an arena record in steer wrestling during the Houston Rodeo.

His love of rodeo continues today, as well as his love of horses. Wayne is a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Texas Quarter Horse Association.

In addition to his interest in rodeo, Stroud also has long supported youth in similar events. He has served on the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo Calf Scramble Committee for the past 32 years. He also served on the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show committee for 10 years.

Stroud did not limit his efforts to rodeo and horses. For 12 years, he served as Wilson County Pct. 4 commissioner, and also served as a director of Capital Farm Credit for 29 years.

For almost half a century, Stroud has ranched in Stockdale. Today, he and his son, Brian, operate the Stroud Racing Stable. His daughter, Debbie, also is involved in agriculture.

Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame

“The Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame has stood as a staple organization for the sport of Rodeo for 35 years now. The organization, dedicated to the sport of rodeo and the recognition of Texas’ contribution to that sport, was founded in 1975 by Johnny Boren and a group of Belton, Texas, businessmen.

“Boren was ... a well-known bull rider and founder of the Old Timers Rodeo Association. The Hall of Fame was first housed in several Belton-area businesses, including a western wear store. ...

“This year, the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame left its first ‘true home’ and opened up shop inside the historic Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The Hall contains pictures and biographies of famous Texas Rodeo cowboys who helped to shape the sport from its inception until the present day.”

Nominations process

Current members of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, in good standing, may nominate a candidate for membership in the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. The process includes a biography -- the year of Association finals, major rodeos won, and other rodeo accomplishments. The candidate must have had primary residency in Texas during their rodeo career and be 45 years of age or older.
