Sophie Dale Sparks was granted her angel wings on Sunday, July 10, 2011. Her final days were spent surrounded by friends that Sophie had touched in some small way, throughout her short, yet very memorable life.

Sophie’s life would seem too short to many, but for those who were touched by her, understood that the quality of existence far exceeds quantity of time in which you live it. Her infectious smile could melt the hearts of those around her.

Despite her illness, Sophie possessed strength, perseverance, and the ability to overcome incredible odds. With her courage she led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. She enjoyed music, reading stories, and all God’s creatures.

With Sophie’s passing, we remind others that her life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss her every day, especially her winning smile, she will always remain forever in our hearts. Through her teachings about life, we were able to create wonderful memories and it has been a privilege to be her parents. We are so thankful Sophie’s brother, Jacob, was able to know his sister and will hold dear the memory of Sophie’s gentle spirit.

Sophie leaves behind many wonderful caregivers who provided love and support that enhanced her quality of life. Sophie’s love extends to her wonderful nurses, Mary, Amy, Dallas, Claire, and the rest of the staff at Methodist Children’s Hospital. There is a special place in our hearts for Sophie’s physicians, Dr. Patel and Dr. Alter; because of their continual dedication, love, and support, Sophie was able to survive some of her toughest medical challenges. She will be dearly missed by her special caregivers, and godparents, Glenn and Shannon Kosub.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Adele Dipple; her maternal grandfather, Guy Thomas; and her uncles, Tobin Thomas of Eagle Lake and James Ross of Bigfoot.

Sophie is survived by her loving parents, Stephen Sparks and Kasey Sparks of La Vernia; her brother, Jacob Sparks; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Jeanie Sparks of Kingsbury; her maternal grandmother, Peggy Thomas and stepgrandfather Allen Burk of San Angelo; a special cousin, James Ross; and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A visitation was held Tuesday, July 12, from 2-8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia, Texas.

A Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the church.

Interment will follow in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in La Vernia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Sophia Chapel c/o St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 14151 U.S. 87, La Vernia, TX 78121 or to the Make A Wish Foundation, 2224 Walsh Tarlton Lane, Suite 200, Austin, TX 78746.
