President Barack Obama enjoys comparing himself to Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln. He did so during the campaign, and again last week during Congressional hearings on raising the debt ceiling.

We are not amused by his comparison.

Last week's meetings with congressional leaders about the budget ended with the president
abruptly walking out. Not able to get his way, he just up and left the meeting, obviously thinking that he was showing strength by throwing his weight around. Instead, he looked like the kid taking his marbles and going home.

His action is also reminiscent of another time when he walked out on someone. This time Obama left the Israeli prime minister, who was his guest in the White House, to fend for himself while he (Obama) dined with his family. That was an international embarrassment, and so is this.

The Treasury Department has said if a deal is not reached by Aug. 2, the US would default on its debt. Obama said such a move could pull the US back into a recession. It might be news to most Americans that the recession ever ended. With unemployment holding at 9.2 percent, it's hard to tell.

Obama tells his own congressional leadership not to call his bluff and then further threatens them with, "I'm going to the American people on this."

Indeed, he did. He threatened to withhold Social Security and military payments in an attempt to scare old people to death. These are hardly actions of a leader.

American desperately need a leader, and if the Republicans cannot come up with one, Obama will stay in the top spot by default.

There are a lot of conservatives watching and expecting -- desperately hoping -- to see some strength and resolve from the Republicans.

If ever we needed conservative Republicans to show backbone, it is now. Our future depends on it.

Although it's intimidating to have the media cheerleading for the liberals, conservative Republicans should remember that Obama is no Reagan.
