La Vernia youngster to race in national track meet
Adrian Nunez, 11, of La Vernia sprints his way toward the finish line during an 800-meter race. Nunez will be competing in a national track and field meet in Kansas next week.
LA VERNIA -- When it comes to track and field, there seems to be something in the water in La Vernia. The Bear and Lady Bear high school teams dominate the competition every year, and we are hearing about more and more rising stars in the area. Once such future hopeful is 11-year-old Adrian Nunez.
Nunez, the son of Jorge and Adrianna Nunez of La Vernia, has always had a gift for running. He excelled in sports like soccer that tested his running endurance, but his heart has always longed for the speed and competition of track and field. Inspiration is all around him, including his uncle, Adrian Reyes, who recently completed his third Iron Man Triathlon.
“Adrian’s classmate, Dylan Forde, commented to me that ‘Adrian is the fastest kid in school without even trying,’” Jorge said.
Hearing his son’s classmate led Jorge to a search for a track and field club in the area. He wanted to give Adrian the opportunity to put his natural running ability to the test.
“After some searching on the Internet, we found a track club in the Cibolo-Schertz area that competes in USA Track & Field,” Jorge said.
Soon, Adrian began running with the club team, and turned in respectable initial times. He ran the 100-meter dash in 12.87 seconds, did the 200-meter dash in 29 seconds, turned in a 1:08 time in the 400-meter dash, and stopped the clock at 2:56 in the 800-meter run. After just two months of training, though, Adrian sliced time off every event. His 100-meter time was down to 12.56, he shaved a second off his 200-meter time, dropped 5 seconds from his 400-meter time to 1:03, and dropped an incredible 25 seconds from his 800-meter time to an impressive 2:30.37.
Adrian qualified in the 100-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter events at the district meet, but decided to concentrate on the 400- and 800-meter events at the regional meet, forgoing the 100-meter dash. Adrian ran well at the Region 12 Track and Field Championships July 5-9 in Arlington, and qualified for the national championship in the 800-meter run.
The National USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championship meet is scheduled for Tuesday through Sunday, July 26-31, in Wichita, Kan. The events can be seen live on the Internet, and Adrian is scheduled to run July 28 at 1:45 p.m.
“We would like to thank the local community for their support, and would like to especially thank Kyle Evans and James Coleman for all they have done to help Adrian compete at the national level,” Jorge said.
No matter how things turn out for Adrian in Kansas, one thing appears certain, he has a bright future in the world of track and field, and the Bears will be anxiously awaiting his arrival at the high school in a few years.
