Laura Starc DeWitt, 82, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2011. She was born in Trieste, Italy, on April 23, 1929.

Laura was the daughter of Angela and Antonio Starc. She lived through difficult times during World War II in Italy. She had seven brothers and sisters. Her early years were often beset with extreme hardships and challenges, as she became the eldest sibling in the family at a young age after losing a brother in a concentration camp during the war. After the war, Laura worked as a waitress at a U.S. Army restaurant in Trieste. There she met a young soldier from Birds Eye, Ind., Walter E. DeWitt, and they fell in love. By 1964, Walter had retired from the Army and they settled in San Antonio, Texas.

Laura was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter E. DeWitt; her sister-in-law, Viola Moczygemba; her brother-in-law, Charles DeWitt of Indiana; her parents; her sister, Bruna Starc; and her brothers, Carlo Starc and Sylvano Starc.

She is survived by her brother, Luciano Starc; her sister, Lucia Starc Hollenbeck; and several nieces and nephews still living in Italy. She is also survived by her daughter, Laura Jean Niland and husband Andy; her nieces, Frances Stewart of Nixon and Norma Jendrusch of Victoria; her nephew, Leo Moczygemba of Floresville; and many great-nieces and great-nephews in Texas, Indiana, and Italy.

A visitation was held on Sunday, July 10, from 6-8 p.m. in the Schertz Funeral Home in Schertz.

A funeral service was held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Interment followed at 11:30 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
