La Vernia’s Cody Wagenfehr shines in Port ‘A’ fishing tourney

PORT ARANSAS -- Most 10-year-old boys love to go fishing with their fathers, but not many take it seriously enough to compete in tournaments. Cody Wagenfehr of La Vernia is not your average 10-year-old fisherman, though.
For Cody, fishing trips into the Gulf of Mexico began shortly after birth. His father, John, recalled that first boat ride, saying he and Cody’s mom, Tara Mihalski, took the little guy across the flats of Redfish Bay when he was only 6 months old.
John said Cody hails from a long line of fishermen, explaining that he, his father, and his grandfather have all been “hooked” since they were young. John works as a part-time guide when he isn’t busy running the family business, and has even had his captain’s license for about four years. It’s not John’s own experiences that light up his eyes these days, however; it is watching his son mature into a top-notch angler.
“He basically has spent his entire life on the water, and the results are starting to show,” John said. “Cody has pure fishing blood and, according to him, fishing this tournament is better than Christmas.”
Better than Christmas? That is a pretty bold statement coming from a 10-year-old boy, but after winning first place in the trout division last year, Cody came back strong in this year’s 37th annual Outboard Fishing Tournament in Port Aransas with a first-place finish in trout, a first-place finish in flounder, and a second-place finish in the heaviest stringer competition. That sounds like it could be better than Christmas morning.
Against the junior competitors, Cody took home his two trophies by catching the heaviest speckled trout and flounder. His trout weighed in at 3.20 pounds and measured 21-1/2 inches long, while his flounder stretched 14-7/8 inches long and weighed 1.8 pounds.
Perhaps even more impressive was his second-place overall finish in the “heaviest stringer” category. In order to win this, anglers had to turn in three different species of fish, including redfish, trout, and flounder. Cody finished ahead of more than 190 adult and junior competitors to take home second-place honors.
“He just has a natural ability,” John said. “I try to teach him everything I know about fishing and he absorbs it just like a sponge. He is always surprising me, and soon will be out-fishing me, as well.”
John went on to say that Cody is also a great athlete and enjoys playing sports, but “steers clear” of commitments that will force him into weekend practices and games -- because it messes with his fishing time.
“Cody is just an excellent kid all around,” John said. “[He’s] funny, well-behaved, and an up-and-coming elite fisherman.”
The annual Outboard Fishing Tournament was held July 15-17 in Port Aransas. The event is held each year to benefit the Port Aransas Volunteer Fire Department.
