Harlingen, Texas, August 2, 2011: This is the week when we could have defaulted on our debt. It is also a time when we pasted together a mix of pledges and promises made up of mostly smoke and mirrors. But, that is what always comes out of legislation produced in Washington D. C. As with other pledges to correct problems, it will most likely fade into nothingness.

Anyone believing this debt reduction and debt ceiling increase package is a win for the American people must also still believe in the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. In fact, those two characters of myth will deliver you more debt reduction than the Congress of the United States of America.

Both sides of the political aisle are busy patting themselves on the back and running for every available microphone to tell the American people about their wonderful accomplishment. Bull Crap!!! We haven’t accomplished anything expect make it possible for the Obama Administration to move us $2.4 Trillion deeper in debt.

That trickle of dollars the politicos laud as spending cuts does not scratch the surface of the problem...and the promise of more cuts and tax reforms to come is even more Kabuki Theater. When has any “promise” out of Washington ever become a reality?

You will hear a lot of chanting about entitlements in the coming months. These would not be difficult to repair, except for the 535 Washington double talkers who wish to spin the problems to their own advantage. Entitlements are the perfect excuse for Congress to do nothing except play the blame game.

It is true that we have a very serious problem with Social Security. A program that was designed to be held in trust and gain acceptable interest over the years was in effect stolen by Congress and the money paid in by you and me was used to finance uncountable pork barrel projects and buy more votes. If the account had been left solvent instead of being turned into a pile of unfunded congressional IOUs, it would not be too difficult to repair.

Some relief to Social Security and even to Medicare could be obtained by increasing the qualifying age to 67 or 68. Democrats will fight that tooth and nail because they know their voting base would be within that numerical mix and might have negative feelings concerning any age increase. When addressing Medicaid we should look to the level of income and perhaps increase the minimum income qualification. We should also aggressively address the serious amount of fraud, which exists in that program.

Realistically, we all know in our hearts none of this will take place. We are in for several months of name-calling, finger pointing, lies and more lies. As we move closer to the brink again, a “wonderful bipartisan deal” will emerge. In the end it will mean higher taxes and little to no modification of the national debt.

How do we solve this continuing problem? One suggestion is to vote against everyone who is currently in office. If we would do that, someday those who seek to enhance themselves from the public piggy bank might learn to truly start representing the people.

I would hope I live long enough to see them all hanging from lamposts, except that things will be so bad by that time I don't want to be around.
