Ewald’s sales soar with Eagle Ford shale exploration
FLORESVILLE -- Ewald Tractor, a Kubota dealer with locations in Seguin, Boerne, and Floresville, is the recipient of the prestigious President’s Kaizen Award. Created in November 1948, the company received Kubota’s prestigious award for outstanding performance as a dealership in 2010.
According to a July 18 Kubota press release, “Ewald Tractor was among the top 25 percent of Kubota dealers across the United States to win this elite honor based on 2010 Kubota product sales, market share growth, and branding success criteria.”
Henry Ewald introduced the Kubota line of tractors to the Seguin store in 1989 at a time of a record drought and poor economic conditions. Ironically, in the year Ewald receives national recognition, the area is once again experiencing another drought.
While the drought may have diminished sales in hay equipment, the oil and gas exploration related to the Eagle Ford shale has given the corporation a sales boost. Landowners with earnings from oil and gas leases have not forgotten the dealership that they have known through the years for its service.
Will Scull, manager of the Ewald Floresville location, said that since the oil and gas exploration began, he has seen landowners upgrading their equipment or purchasing brand-new tractors.
Scull, who joined the business in 2002, said customers come from Laredo, George West, Alice, Uvalde, and Victoria.
Kubota’s heavy-duty, high-performance RTV series of utility vehicles is among its best sellers, while the M Series mid-size AG 95-135 cab series leads the way for tractors.
Customers turn to Kubota due to the price for “an excellent product that has no problems,” said Nick Hudek, Ewald Tractor sales representative. Kubota is known for dependability, with different types and sizes available to suit various needs. Other products include utility mowers and skid loaders.
The Floresville location serves the hay production sector, with July and August considered “good months” for sales. Sales are down due to the drought, but if the area receives rain, the sales will increase, Scull said.
Raymond Kotara, the resident “guru,” worked at the main location in Seguin prior to joining the Floresville team. He is known for his “Ask Raymond” question/answer in Ewald ads.
Hudek, with 35 years’ experience, has served as sales representative since 2000. He is well-known to area farmers, since he worked in the past with Gorzell Parts, Skrobarcek Implement, and Deitz Tractor Co.
Hudek estimates 95 percent of recent sales are derived from Eagle Ford shale activity. This makes up for the loss of sales due to the drought, he said.
Ewald’s customers are comprised of “weekend” farmers, those who do not make a living entirely off the farm, Hudek said. He sees fewer full-time “big” farmers today.
Scull, Kotara, and Hudek are joined at the Floresville location by Carolyn Skloss as bookkeeper, Keith Bednorz as technician, and Terry Cottrel and Joey Wiatrek on the parts team. All joined the Ewald team between 2000 and 2006, with most transferring from other equipment dealers.
Scull said the business has seen minor changes since the Ewald relocation in 2005 to its building just north of Floresville on U.S. 181.
The summer hours of the three locations are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon.

Ewald Tractor History
Ewald Tractor Co. was founded in November 1948 by Herbert John Ewald Sr. and his oldest son, Herbert John “Red” Ewald Jr., in Seguin, as a Ford tractor dealership.
Herbert Sr.’s youngest son, Henry, joined the company in the early 1960s, and worked with Red in Seguin.
In the early 1960s, a satellite location was opened in Karnes City, with Red serving as the manager of this location, while Henry continued in Seguin. Red closed the dealership in Karnes City to begin Red Ewald Inc., manufacturing fiberglass tanks and other products.
In 1989, Henry added the Kubota line of tractors to the Seguin store.
Henry retired after almost 40 years and turned the management of the company over to his son, Herbert “John” Ewald III in 2000.
In 2000, Ewald Tractor purchased the assets of Greater Southwest Equipment’s two locations in San Antonio and Floresville.
Today, John continues the Ewald tradition of “a family business remaining where people can still find the same personal attention the way it was 60 years ago.”
