Washington, DC --Congressman Charles Gonzalez (TX -- 20) issued the following statement regarding the 46th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act:

"Today, we celebrate the 46th anniversary of one of the most historic and revolutionary pieces of legislation in America’s history, and we honor the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of justice, equality, and fairness during the Civil Rights struggle.

"Unfortunately the legacy of this groundbreaking legislation is marred by the recent attempts of strident and divisive voices to circumvent the Voting Rights Act of 1965 through voter ID laws, shorter early voting periods and discriminatory redistricting plans. This assault from the extreme elements in our society is a shameful attempt to disenfranchise millions of Americans from their Constitutional right to vote. It is truly shameful that we are still fighting this kind of injustice today, but I stand committed to defend the legacy of this historic law and the Constitution of the United States."
