William ‘Bill’ O. Fail

William “Bill” O. Fail, 95, of Chanute, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, in the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. Bill was born in Rest, Kan., on Oct. 18, 1915, to George Roy and Bessie M. Ramp Fail. He attended Altoona schools.

He married Winifred W. Worley on May 2, 1937, in Los Angeles, Calif. They made their home in Los Angeles until 1947.

Bill worked as a machinist for Norris Stamping Manufacturing in Los Angeles during World War II. He was a farmer in Wilson County, Texas, and Kansas, and he also worked as a plant line manager for the Parsons Army Ordinance Plant until his retirement.

He was a member of the NFO, Humboldt Farmer’s Co-op board, Cedar Creek Watershed Conservation Board, Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club, and Faith Bible Church in Chanute.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Reva Jean Amrine; and three brothers, Ivan Junior Fail, Louis Irvin Fail, and Donald Roger Fail.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred; his three daughters, Patricia A. Fail and husband Kenneth Sprague of Iola, Janice L. Van Hoozer and husband Gary of Buffalo, and Rita Hart of Independence; one son, Gary D. Fail and wife Connie of Chanute; his grandchildren, Kiz and Joel Porter, Kip and Summer Van Hoozer, Kevin Olson, Brett and Betsy Olson, Valerie and Jay-Michael Jones, Nicholas and Amber Hart, James Hart, and Brandon Fail and fiancée Jamie Bailey; his great-grandchildren, Kassidy and Kaila Shockley, Warrick and Vera Olson, and Whitley and Deacon Jones; a brother, Marion Arthur Fail of Chanute; and a sister, Ruby Juanita Fail Fusco of Topeka.

The family received friends Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2-4 p.m. in the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute.

A funeral service was held Monday at 10 a.m. in the High Prairie Church in Altoona, Kan.

Interment followed in the Altoona Cemetery in Altoona.

Memorial donations may be made to Cherry Street Youth Center or the Kevin Olson Van Fund and may be sent to the funeral home, Penwell-Gabel Funeral Homes, 16 N. Forest, Chanute, KS 66720.
