KENEDY -- Team ropers have another arena where they can enjoy their sport, with the Chesnutt Arena now one of the most recent to be built in South Texas. Located at 201 F.M. 2509 in Kenedy, the arena was the site of the sixth annual South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association Benefit Team Roping.

Malcolm Chesnutt, who often drove 30 to 40 miles to practice team roping, built the arena in 2010 to help the community. Seymour Construction served as the contractors.

The first event in the arena was held Aug. 21, with the first-ever MCI team roping event. Short Round Productions provided the stock.

The arena includes:

•Quick Silver-designed arena with dimensions of 250 feet by 140 feet.

•Quick Silver air chute with remote-control operation, as well as a manual lever.

•13 acres of lighted parking.

•Stripping chute with a 2-foot concrete pad. This allows children, ladies, and the elderly to take head and heel ropes off with ease after ropings.

•An 8-foot-by-12-foot elevated, air-conditioned press box that allows accommodation for up to five people. The press box has a 4-foot roof overhang that reduces glare and sun.

•20 lights encompassing the arena, with two lights per pole. Lights are positioned 34 feet in the air.

•State-of-the-art TOA Bjorn’s speakers.
