KENEDY -- Team ropers across South Texas tested their skills July 23, during the sixth annual South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association (SCTICA) Benefit Team Roping. For the first time, the benefit was held in the Chesnutt Arena located on F.M. 2509 in Kenedy.

When the dust settled, high-point winners were heeler Armando Flores and header Hunter Geistweidt. Each cowboy was awarded a Chesnutt Arena saddle stand, crafted and donated by Rusty Badillo of Chesnutt Arena.

Flores also won first place with Dustin Wright in the No. 9 roping event. The cowboys were awarded cash and Crossroads belt buckles.

Colton Muse and Gary Mills claimed the fast time winners honor. They were awarded Sutton ropes and bags, donated by Cactus Ropes.

Muse and Mills also won first in the No. 11 roping, earning Crossroads belt buckles and cash.

Mills returned to the winners’ circle, this time with Rusty Badillo, to claim a second-place finish in the No. 11 roping. Badillo and Mills earned cash and Double J Saddlery breast collars.

Geistweidt was another double winner, capturing second and third places in the No. 9 roping.

Geistweidt and Sam Fossett each won cash and Double J Saddlery breast collars for placing second.

When partnered with Gary Blaschke, Geistweidt placed third.

Another Muse joined the winners’ circle, this time Roger Muse in the No. 9 roping, when partnered with Chris Gonzales. The duo placed fourth.

The two ropings ran simultaneously, said Brad Cotton, president of the SCTICA.

“A big thank you goes out to all our sponsors, participants, Rusty Badillo of Chesnutt Arena, and the directors of the SCTICA for their contributions of time and money, which made the roping an overall success,” Cotton said .

The Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas is a grass-roots organization dedicated to presenting a strong voice for the beef industry statewide and nationally.
