LUBBOCK -- Fourteen members of the East Central FFA chapter attended the 83rd annual Texas FFA Convention held July 11-15.

East Central FFA members who attended the convention were: Jordan Hevner, Brooke Kosub, Christi Schick, Lndsay Hamer, Cassidy Jordan, Heather Kosub, Jared Pieniazek, Jacob Allen, Colton Zizelman, Kyle Hudek, Megan Van Der Knaap, Amber Kerns, Kaitlin Pollok, Holly Bailey, and Shelbie Thames.

The 83rd annual Texas FFA Convention recorded more than 10,000 members and guests. Members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements, and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.

More than $2 million in scholarships were awarded to FFA members, including Jared Pieniazek, Heather Kosub, and Shelbie Thames of East Central High School. They earned these scholarships through the San Antonio Livestock Show, the San Antonio School Tours Program, the Houston Livestock Show, and the Dick Wallrath Foundation.

More than 1,300 members received the Lone Star FFA Degree, including East Central members Jacob Allen, Kyle Hudek, Amber Kerns, Kyle Brown, Holly Bailey, Brooke Kosub, Christi Schick, and Kaitlin Pollok.

The Texas FFA degree is the highest degree of active membership bestowed by a state FFA association. More than 2,000 members were recognized on stage for their accomplishments. Jared Pieniazek was named the state proficiency winner in Poultry Production, which was sponsored by the Sara Strey Foundation, and Michelle Knox was named Star American in AgriScience. Both Jared and Michelle will advance to the regional selection committee.

Members also competed for state titles in public speaking and agriscience events. The East Central FFA also competed in the AgriScience Fair. Cassidy Jordan was third in the Microbiology division, and Lindsay Hamer was the state winner in the Engineering division. Lindsay earned scholarships for their efforts and will compete in the National AgriScience Fair in Indianapolis, Ind., in October.

Cassidy was also a finalist in Star Chapter Award event. The East Central FFA was also rated gold in the Golden Horizon Award. This award represents the top chapters in the state based on total FFA participation.

In the interest of premier leadership, personal growth, and career success, the Texas FFA Association conducted their business activities and held elections. East Central’s very own Shelbie Thames was the Area VII candidate. Shelbie was one of 10 candidates from across the state. During the state election process, each candidate takes a written test over the FFA and agriculture, replies to a written prompt, is interviewed, and must give a speech. During the process, the 10 candidates are narrowed to the top four, after which there is a run-off. Shelbie did an excellent job in making the run-off and was selected as a Texas FFA vice president. Shelbie will serve the state for the next year.
