SAN ANTONIO -- A La Vernia High School graduate is the recipient of one of three scholarships presented this year by the Hermann Sons Youth Camp in Comfort.

Logan Mills is a member of La Vernia Hermann Sons Lodge No. 180 and lives in La Vernia. He plans to study engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

Some of his accomplishments include being a State Farm Scholar Athlete, senior class officer, Cross Examination Debate state qualifier, defensive captain of the football team, all-district defensive end, State VASE Art Contest medalist, Art Club vice president, and National Honor Society member.

Scholarship recipients must be a current Hermann Sons member, a graduating high school senior, and a past HSYC camper.

In the essay accompanying his application, Logan wrote, “I was able to participate in an environment with countless activities and friendly counselors and campers. Being a Hermann Sons camper helped to shape the person I am today through the independence I gained, the many classes which stimulated my interests in activities that I am involved with today, and the network of friendships I am able to be a part of because of the camp.”

The scholarship is named in memory of Shannon Gaffney, a former camper and counselor who died in 1998. She is remembered for her enthusiasm for camp and the way she exemplified the spirit of camp.

More than 3,000 junior members of Hermann Sons visited Comfort as campers during eight one-week sessions this summer.
