Obama: American efficiency to blame for economy

Those who want to take money from producers to give it to those who are non-producers and call it “stimulus,” do not understand the free-market economy.

All this kind of money exchange will ever do is keep people busy. It’s no more productive than digging ditches and filling them up again just to keep them moving. Such a program will work only in an economy totally controlled by the government, where every person is allocated only his or her share.

On the other hand, an economy in a free market is comprised of humans making goods or providing services and then trading excess goods and services with others who require them. Thus, production and efficiency are increased and encouraged. Everybody wins.

Our economy is in the tank now and, President Barack Obama believes it is due to our penchant for efficiency. He said he wants to “create” jobs. Unfortunately, the only jobs that can be created by government are those “busy” jobs that, incidentally, also buy votes. The president said, “There are not enough jobs to go around. Just look at our banks.”

He pointed out that banks now use Automated Teller Machines instead of employing people. Yes, and how many grocery stores have self-check lines where no human is employed. And instead of checking in at the gate at the airport, you go to the kiosk -- no more bellboys, so to speak.

Looking further at the president’s theory, consider how many workers were replaced with the introduction of tractors and combines. These innovations have replaced a lot of laborers working in the fields.

Consider the other jobs replaced by technology. Secretaries used to take dictation and use shorthand. One little hand-held gadget (recorder, BlackBerry, i-phone?) now can take the place of three people painstakingly taking dictation by hand. Secretaries used to have to change the ribbons on the typewriters. ... OMG! What good ole days those were.

Isn’t it easier and more efficient to spit out an e-mail that takes mere seconds than hand-writing a message using pen and paper, addressing an envelope and putting postage on it, only to hope that it reaches its destination?

Elevators no longer require operators. Alarm systems have taken the place of many security guards. Electronic monitors keep a vigil on patients so that fewer nurses are required.

None of these are the reason for an economic downturn. As long as production continues, it does not matter how it is achieved. Other jobs take the place of those that are obsolete.

To suggest that we go back to the old ways using manual labor instead of using technology is absurd. Why would any business handicap itself by choosing to employ more low-wage people to replace what machines now do?

They wouldn’t.

But then again, we know that Obama has never run a business and doesn’t have a clue how to run one; nor does he understand what makes the economy tick.
