POTH -- When the state volleyball polls were released last week, it was no surprise to see the Poth Pirettes ranked as the No. 1 team in Class 2A. The Pirettes finished as the state’s runners-up last year, and return a very solid group of players for 2011.

The Pirettes began their quest for another state title when they traveled to Smithson Valley Aug. 9. The Pirettes rose to the occasion, and handed the Rangers their first loss of the season, beating Smithson Valley 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22.

Poth then hosted Boerne Champion the following day, and knocked off the Lady Chargers in straight games, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22.

With a 2-0 record to start the season, the Pirettes traveled to Wimberley to participate in their first tournament of the season. Poth played three matches on Aug. 12, and walked away with straight-games wins over Bandera, Liberty Hill, and Kerrville Tivy. They returned Aug. 13 to play in the gold bracket, and once again earned straight-games wins over Fredericksburg and La Vernia, before advancing to the championship match against Round Rock Stony Point.

During the championship match, the Pirettes received contributions from the entire roster. Poth won the first game by the score of 25-20, and cruised to an easy victory with a 25-15 win in game two.

Jordan Kotara led the Pirettes in the championship match with 8 kills, 8 digs, and 1.5 blocks. Kelsey Felux and Micah Weaver each tallied 4 kills, and Avery Acker hammered down 3 of her own. Corin Nelson registered 2 kills, and Tara Broyles was good for one herself. Acker had 6 assists for Poth, Jessica Dziuk recorded 5, and Kotara, Broyles, and Weaver earned 1 apiece. Acker and Dziuk combined for 5 service aces.

Defensively, Acker added 6 digs to go with Kotara’s 8, while Felux, Nelson, Weaver, and Dziuk each added another 4. Broyles also had a dig. Nelson had 1.5 blocks, and Acker and Weaver each earned a half block.

Acker was named as the tournament MVP in Wimberley, while Kotara and Felux were named to the all-tournament team. The Pirettes improved their overall record to 8-0 with the wins, and will continue their non-district schedule until Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to George West to face the Lady Longhorns.
