East Central names gym for Coach Stan Bonewitz
Receiving a plaque for his 500th win, Stan Bonewitz was recognized at an East Central pep rally. Coach Bonewitz accomplished this feat while coaching at East Central High School.
EAST CENTRAL -- The newly renovated gymnasium at East Central High School will receive a new name this weekend. In honor of the longtime Hornet coach, the gym will soon be known as the Stan Bonewitz Center.
Bonewitz, who coached the varsity Hornet basketball team from 1981 through 2005, racked up a total of 539 victories at East Central, and more than 700 during his career. He led the Hornets into the playoffs 18 times, including three trips to the state tournament, and a state championship in 1995. East Central had a perfect season that year, finishing with an overall record of 35-0, while scoring an average of 109 points per game and beating Dallas Carter 108-86 for the title.
Over the years, Bonewitz was named as the San Antonio Express-News Coach of the Year three times, and was named Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in 1995. He led the Hornets to 17 district titles, eight area championships, and six regional tournament appearances. His team finished as state semifinalists twice, and as a state finalist once, before earning the state title in 1995. His teams led the city in scoring average 13 times, and three of his teams averaged more than 100 points per game.
The Stan Bonewitz Center will be dedicated in a ceremony Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 10 a.m. Following the ceremony, a tour of the new campus will be offered and refreshments will be provided. The public is invited to celebrate Bonewitz and the legacy he leaves at East Central.
