Gaston Henry Thurmond, 101, of Belmont, Texas, and formerly of San Antonio, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, in Seguin. He was born in Gonzales County on Feb. 8, 1910, to Wiley Jefferson and Janie Catherine (O’Neill) Thurmond.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; and two brothers.

Gaston is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ophelia (Hines) Thurmond; his daughter, Judy Howell and husband Richard of San Antonio; two brothers, Joe Newman Thurmond of San Antonio and J.L. Thurmond and wife Cletty of Belmont; a sister, Joyce Whitworth of Pasadena; his two grandchildren, Alyssa Howell and husband John Smith of Houston and Richard “Chip” Thurmond Howell and wife Tonya of Lewisville; two great-grandchildren, Richard “Zane” Thurmond Howell II and Campbell Lynn Howell; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A visitation was held on Sunday, Aug. 14, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

A funeral service was held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Claude Robold officiating.

Interment followed in the Caraway Cemetery near Nixon. Memorial contributions may be made to Belmont Methodist Church, Belmont, TX 78629 or Guadalupe Valley Hospice, 1215 E. Court St., Seguin, TX 78155.
