Kyle Busch took the checkered flag in the Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday to claim his fourth win of the season and his first-career Cup win at the track.

“It’s so awesome to finally win here at Michigan,” Busch said in victory lane.

Greg Biffle started on the pole and dominated the first half of the race, but pit strategy that involved taking four tires near the midway point of the race got Biffle mired back in the field and unable to get back toward the front. He ended up finishing outside the top-10.

Jimmie Johnson found himself in the back of the pack early when he made two pit stops during a caution that came out on lap 29. In those two stops, the No. 48 crew got the car handling better and Johnson was able to move toward the front and wound up with a second-place finish.

“We had a tough start to the race on pit road and on the race track,” Johnson said.

Jeff Gordon claimed the lead with 86 laps to go and ran up front until the water temperature went up in his car because of debris on the grill. He relinquished the lead to Matt Kenseth in an attempt to clear his grill, and when it was clear and the water temperature went down, he reclaimed the top spot with 74 laps to go.

Cars begin to head down pit road with 64 laps to go, and when the cycle of green flag stops completed, Kenseth was back up front. Gordon quickly took the lead away, though, and Kenseth was shuffled back to third when he lost the second position to Busch.

Johnson’s pit road-related fortune changed when he caught a break, courtesy of the yellow flag with 33 laps to go when Dave Blaney’s car slowed on the race track. Johnson was already on pit road to start the next cycle of green flag stops.

He was able to stay on the lead lap and inherited the lead under the caution when everyone else hit pit road. Johnson pulled away on the restart as Gordon, Bush and Kenseth battled three-wide for the second spot. Busch got the position, and Brad Keselowski moved into third.

Busch took the lead from Johnson with 13 laps to go and stayed up front the rest of the way. Kurt Busch brought out one final caution when he hit the wall with four laps remaining. Drivers from eighth on back headed down pit road for fresh tires while the leaders stayed on the race track.

Busch, Johnson, Keselowski, Mark Martin, Kenseth and Gordon restarted first through fifth for a green-white-checker attempt. The top-four held their positions until the checkered flag, but Ryan Newman made his way up to fifth with two new tires to round out the top-five. Gordon fell back to sixth, and Kenseth dropped back to finish 10th.
