FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville Jaguar volleyball team hosts a large tournament each year, and the 2011 Jaguar Classic proved no different, as 20 teams from across the area gathered in Floresville Aug. 19-20.

This year’s participants included a pair of local teams -- the Floresville Jaguars and Stockdale Lady Brahmas -- but also many teams from San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Schools in close proximity, such as Judson, Wagner, Brackenridge, Harlandale, Burbank, and McCollum participated, as did schools a little farther away, like Navarro, Somerset, Pearsall, Lockhart, Eagle Pass, and Corpus Christi Ray.

After pool play was completed, each team competed in one of three brackets, gold, silver, or bronze.

In the bronze bracket, Stevens defeated Stockdale to advance to the title game, and Edison defeated Brackenridge to do the same. Edison eventually won the bracket, beating Stevens 25-20 and 25-15.

In the silver bracket, Brennan knocked off Pearsall in the first round and Somerset in the second round to earn a spot in the finals. Eagle Pass topped Lockhart in round one, and then upset United in a close match during the second round to also advance to the championship. Eagle Pass won a tight game one in the final by the score of 25-23, and then breezed to victory with a 25-15 win in game two. Somerset and United battled for third-place honors, and United picked up the win, though it was close, and took all three games to get it done at 25-21, 19-25, 25-23.

In the gold bracket, Harlandale topped Corpus Christi Ray in the first round and Wagner in the second to earn its chance at the tournament’s top prize. The Lady Indians would meet Judson in the finals, as the Lady Rockets topped Navarro and Floresville to earn their trip to the tournament championship. It was another tight match, but in the end, Harlandale held on for the win, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21.

The Jaguars topped Lee in the first round before falling to Judson, and Wagner beat McCollum before Harlandale returned the favor. In the third-place game of the gold bracket, the Lady Thunderbirds of Wagner picked up the win over the host team by the score of 25-20, 25-19.

The Jaguars will continue tournament play, as they travel to San Antonio this week to participate in the SAISD tourney. Floresville will continue with its non-district schedule from there, and will face its first District 30-4A opponent Tuesday, Sept. 20, as the team travels to Victoria.
