STOCKDALE -- The Stockdale Brahmas have a new athletic director and head coach for 2011, but Coach Josh West is anything but new to Stockdale. The homegrown coach has been preparing to take command of the Brahmas for years, and is planning to do everything in his power to help them achieve success.

To help the Brahmas find success this season, as they try hard to forget about the 3-6 season record posted last year, the team will lean heavily upon its experienced players. Stockdale will return 17 members to the varsity unit, and will have eight starters back on each side of the ball.

Little will change for the Brahma offense that showed flashes of greatness last year. West had served as the offensive coordinator for the past three years under Coach James Wood, and will continue calling the plays in 2011. West said he was pleased with the unit’s efforts so far this season, and is happy to have both Trevor Baumann and Colton West healthy and ready to play.

On the defensive side of things, the Brahmas will have a little different look. Coach Dave Davis is new to Stockdale this year and has been hired to serve as the Brahmas’ defensive coordinator. Davis has experienced a great deal of success in his career, and has even been an athletic director. He will incorporate some different schemes and sets into the game for Stockdale, but West said he has no concerns at all about the results Davis will produce.

West said his players will also look a bit different this season, as the team truly hit the weight room hard this summer, and should open the season as one of the strongest teams Stockdale has ever had.

“I couldn’t have begged for a better group of kids,” West said. “They worked really hard all summer, and have bought into the system. We’ll be tough.”

One key to success this season will be Stockdale’s senior class. West believes his seniors will take the team in the right direction, and feels they will take charge on the field.

“Our biggest strength will be that senior leadership,” West said. “We have a great group, and they are all about the team.”

On the flip side of that coin, the Brahmas’ greatest weakness is likely to be lack of depth. As a result, West expects several of his athletes to play both offense and defense. The good news is that the program has seen some growth this year, and there will once again be a junior varsity team. Unfortunately, Stockdale was unable to field a junior varsity team in 2010, and West said that cost his younger players a great deal of valuable experience.

The Brahmas will play another tough non-district schedule this year, which will include a pair of state championship teams from 2010. West said the team’s goals are to get better every day, and to outwork the other teams on the field. A winning district record is also on their radar.

“We have to play more physical, and need to get back to where we were,” West said. “I don’t ever want us to get beat because they outworked us. I want the other schools to know that Stockdale will be a physically tough team, and that they are going to have a fight on their hands.”

West said the attitude of toughness will begin at the top, with the coaching staff. He is quite pleased with the group he now has in place.

“We will be intense as coaches. I will be hard, but fair,” West said. “I know that we have the group in place to be successful.”

So how will the Brahmas do in 2011? Only time will tell, but West isn’t worried about what people are saying.

“We are picked fifth,” he said, “but we’d sure like to surprise some people.”seniors will take the team in the right direction, and feels they will take charge on the field.
