POTH -- When August comes to South Texas, a few things down here are a given. For starters, you know it’s going to be hot outside. I can also tell you that the conversations at Merlin’s Barber Shop will shift to football. Oh, and the members of the Poth Pirette volleyball team will be hard at work knocking over anyone and anything standing between them and another state championship.

If you’ve lived in the area for any length of time, you know the above statement to be true. If you are new to the area, or, like me, don’t really remember 2010 as well as you wish you had, consider the following:

Last year, Head Coach Patti Zenner and the Poth Pirette volleyball team put together an overall record of 42 wins and just 6 losses. Of those losses, only one came at the hands of a Class 2A school, and that was when the Pirettes took the court and played for the state title. The other few losses came at the hands of larger schools, although the Pirettes routinely defeated teams with 3A, 4A, and yes, even 5A classifications.

You may recall the Pirettes took a little trip to San Marcos for the state tournament last November. Did they have any trouble getting there? Nope. They know the path quite well.

For those not keeping track, consider this little factoid. Over the past 15 years, the Pirettes have earned a trip to the state tournament 11 times. No other team in the state has been better during that period of time.

But Robert, there were some good seniors on last year’s squad, and Tara Dunn even earned a scholarship to play volleyball for the Oklahoma Sooners. That’s true, but the team remains stacked with talent, and the winning is certain to continue this year.

The team lost Dunn, Maritza Radske, Tiffany Niemietz, and Amy Orth, but returns such players as Avery Acker, Jordan Kotara, Micah Weaver, Kelsee Felux, Corin Nelson, Tara Broyles, Morgan Koenig, Claire Raabe, and Jessica Dziuk. Add sophomore Devon Dylla to the mix, and that forms the 2011 Pirette varsity team.

To say the players have experience would be a terrible understatement. Many of the Pirettes have been on varsity since their freshman year, and experience? Well, it’s through the roof.

So where do the Pirettes stand as the season gets started? Let me tell you. They are standing right at the tippy top.

The Pirettes began the year as the state’s No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A. They were picked above teams like White Oak, Bushland, and Jewett Leon, schools that also have enjoyed tremendous success over the last decade.

The Pirettes began workouts on Aug. 1, and played their first match Aug. 9. The Pirettes defeated Smithson Valley, a Class 4A team, three games to one, then played 4A Boerne Champion the next day, defeating the Chargers in straight sets.

The Pirettes continued to roll from there, knocking off Bandera, Liberty Hill, Kerrville Tivy, Fredericksburg, La Vernia, Round Rock Stoney Point, and Columbus. At the time of this writing, the Pirettes hold a perfect record at 10-0.

So how are the Pirettes going to fare this year? Pretty darned good, I’d say. It seems their No. 1 ranking is quite legit, and the team is off to a great start. I know the fans in Poth love their firetruck parades, and things are looking good so far.
