POTH -- It was a breakout season for the Poth Pirate football team in 2010. The Pirates went 6-0 through the district to grab the title, and finished their regular season with a perfect 10-0 record. Poth picked up a playoff victory, and then ended its year with a very respectable 11-1 mark. But that was last year, and everyone has a clean slate in 2011.

This year will mark four seasons Head Coach Andrew King has been in charge in Poth. He implemented a new system when he got there, and for last year’s senior class, it was a great reward for years of hard work. The Pirates graduated a large portion of that team in May, though, and will return just 10 lettermen this season, with two returning starters on offense and four on defense. Still, the Pirates will have a roster full of talented players, and King said he expects a big year from Braden Lyssy, Phillip Garza, Zach Lyssy, Trey Broyles, and others.

King said there won’t be many changes in terms of the schemes they run, citing their knowledge of the system as one of the team’s greatest strengths.

“We run the same things from junior high on up,” King said. “The kids know what to do, and that will help with the learning curve. They have a good base to start with.”

While their knowledge of the game will be an advantage, the team’s overall lack of Friday-night experience can be seen as its weakness. King said it will be important for his team to get through the first few games, and to get used to “making things happen on Friday night.”

“There are several unknowns about this team,” King said. “We will just have to wait to see how they react.”

In order for the Pirates to find success this year, King believes the team’s leaders are going to have to take over and make sure everyone gets through it.

“I expect our seniors to step up big and to make sure everyone does their part,” he said. “They know what is expected of them.”

King also believes “constant improvement” will be key to finding success in Poth.

“We have to find a way to get better every week,” he said.

There won’t be any district changes for the Pirates in 2011, as they will continue to compete in District 14-2A DII. They will again be matched up with the teams from Three Rivers, Karnes City, Dilley, Stockdale, Nixon-Smiley, and Brooks Academy.

As for season goals, King said there really isn’t much written on paper, but he expects his team to be “a whole lot better the 10th week than the first.”

The Pirates will kick off their season this Friday night at home against Marion, and will begin district competition on Sept. 23 against Stockdale.

“We need to take advantage of our time and work hard,” King said. “We have to improve every week. If we do that, everything else will fall into place.”
