FLORESVILLE -- There is an old saying that “change is the only constant,” and when it comes to the Floresville Jaguar volleyball team, that couldn’t be any truer.

The Jaguar volleyball team has certainly had its share of change over the last few years. Several different coaches have come in and out of the locker room, with each bringing their own brand of play to the team. It seems once a system begins to take hold, the proverbial “reset” button is depressed.

After playing for two different head coaches during the 2010 season, the Jaguars once again have a new head coach, as Regan Curran takes over the reins in Floresville. Curran spent the last two years in Stockdale, where she helped revive the Lady Brahmas’ program, guiding them to a share of the district championship and a berth in the playoffs. She is now hoping to do the same in Floresville.

Along with the coaching change come many changes for the athletes. Curran’s system is different from what the Jags have run in the past, and she utilizes different drills and training techniques. She sees roles differently for different players, too, and some of the girls are now finding themselves in different positions on the court.

“It’s been tough, but they are adjusting well,” Curran said. “The biggest struggle has been getting them to come together as a team, and to understand how I coach, and what I expect.”

And what Curran expects is success.

Last year, the Jags made the playoffs as the third team in the district. While that is good, it won’t be good enough for Curran. That won’t satisfy the competitor inside her. Curran said she wants to see Floresville win the district title, advance well into the playoffs, and become a program that grows and gets better each year. To make those goals a reality, Curran believes the girls just need to get used to working with each other, and to not look back.

“We have the ability,” she said. “Now, we just need to make it happen.”

Curran is counting on a squad with six seniors and seven returning members to help lead the way. She was also pleased to learn that junior Jamie Crowder would be rejoining the team. Crowder, who stands over 6 feet tall, was a member of the varsity volleyball team as a freshman, but did not play for the Jaguars during her sophomore year.

“Practices have been going good, but we are still playing with things,” Curran said. “We are still trying to find out where everyone works best. It is a change for some girls, but we are looking at as many options as possible.”

While Curran is doing everything she can to make the Jaguars successful this season, she is also looking down the road a bit. She stressed that she is working to “build a program” -- not just a team for a single season.

“These girls and this school need consistency,” Curran said. “We need to get everyone on the same page.”

And in order to make it happen, Curran and her staff have been talking to the kids about commitment, and what it is going to take to build a successful program. According to Curran, the Jags are definitely buying into the system, and have “jumped on the bandwagon.”

“We’re really excited about this year,” Curran said. “We’re ready to get started.”
