For the tennis teams from East Central and Floresville, the fall is also a time for competition. Class 5A and 4A teams play a fall team tennis season, and both local schools were anxious to get going.

In Floresville, the Tigers and Jaguars will be doing things a bit differently this year. Coach Mario Martinez has taken over the team since Coach Debbie Gentry’s retirement, and his approach to things will be a little different. There will also be a new Head Coach at the middle school, as Coach Marlana Moeller steps into the role.

“We are trying to unify the two programs,” Martinez said, “We want to get them together as one big team.”

In terms of changes to the program, Martinez said one big difference will be the level to which he stresses the players’ overall conditioning.

“We are going to get into better condition,” he said. “We will be working hard on the weights, and with these agility drills.”

In terms of first-year goals for Martinez, he isn’t playing it easy.

“We want to win the district title, not finish second, and we want to become a state-ranked team,” Martinez said. “We are good enough to do that, we just have to work a bit harder.”

Martinez said his team already has a strong work ethic, and if he can couple their drive with a “can-do attitude,” the team will achieve every goal it sets.

“The talent to win is here,” he said. “We just need to find a way to showcase it.”

The Tigers and Jaguars return another good group of varsity players, and Martinez said that both teams have solid players with good depth.

“I’m excited,” Martinez said. “I’m ready to get started and keep on winning.”

To the north of Floresville, the East Central tennis team has also been preparing for the 2011 fall season. The Hornets are having new courts constructed this year, and have had to move their practices. The team didn’t have to go too far, though, and found themselves at home on the courts at Heritage Middle School.

Head Coach Michael Lopez will continue to lead the way for the Hornet and Lady Hornet teams. He has been working hard to get his team acclimated to the intense heat this year, and should have them ready to go this weekend, as they compete in the Northside ISD tournament.
