Town East Eagles start new season with big win in Waco
Town East 60
Lewisville Temple 12
WACO -- The Town East Eagles kicked off the new season by traveling to Waco to take on the Watchmen of Lewisville Temple Christian Academy. Last year, the Watchmen beat the Eagles by a score of 65-16, but this year, it was a complete turnaround. The Eagles dominated the game from the opening kickoff and won, 60-12.
Town East opened the scoring with freshman Dante Johnson scampering in from 35 yards out. Town East held Temple on its first possession, but Temple did the same on Town East’s second possession. Temple then took its next possession in for a touchdown and it appeared this might be a contest.
Town East would go on to score on its next three possessions in the first quarter. The Eagles scored on 19- and 41-yard receptions from senior Ben Guerra to senior John LaMoy, and a 27-yard run by Johnson. The first quarter ended with Town East up by a score of 30-6.
Temple took its first possession of the second quarter in for a score to make it 30-12, but Town East answered right back with sophomore Drevion Williams taking the ensuing kickoff back 61 yards for a touchdown. He would later add a 37-yard reception for a touchdown. The second-quarter scoring ended with senior Dela Antunes returning an interception 78 yards for his first touchdown of the season. The halftime score was 54-12.
Town East took the opening drive of the third quarter in for a score with Johnson catching a 1-yard pass to put Town East up by more than 45 points in the second half. In six-man football, there is a 45-point mercy rule, and the game was called at that point.
LaMoy led the defense with 8 tackles, while Antunes and Johnson each had five. Matthew Cortez was 6 for 7 on extra points during the Eagles’ win.
Johnson led the Eagle running game with 127 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. LaMoy carried five times for 36 yards, and Marcos Melchor had one run for 10 yards.
LaMoy pulled in three receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns, Williams had one catch for 37 yards and a touchdown, Guerra had a catch for 6 yards, and Johnson had one catch for 1 yard and a touchdown. Guerra completed 5 of 11 passing attempts for 101 yards and four touchdowns, while Johnson threw the ball once for 6 yards.
Town East will travel to Winston School in San Antonio this Friday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
