Boerne Champion 51
East Central 28

EAST CENTRAL -- The East Central Hornets squared off against the Boerne Champion Chargers for their first game of the season last Friday, with the Hornets ultimately coming up short, 51-28.
The end of the first half saw East Central nearly tied with the Chargers at 15-14 in favor of Boerne. East Central kept it close until the third quarter when they were again separated by a single point at 29-28 in favor of the visiting Chargers.
Things began to change late in the third quarter, though, as Boerne Champion scored from 2 yards out with just 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The kick was good, and the Chargers led the Hornets 36-28 as they moved into the fourth quarter.
Boerne went on to add two additional touchdowns in the final quarter, giving the Chargers a 51-28 win over the Hornets.
Passing yards were a factor, with East Central only throwing for 43 yards to Boerne’s 158. No passes connected for a touchdown for the Hornets, but a 2-point conversion in the last seconds of the first half kept them in the game after a previous blocked extra-point attempt.
East Central’s Chris Armstrong carried the ball for 156 yards and scored two touchdowns. David Clay recovered a fumble and returned it 40 yards for another Hornet touchdown. Kyle Padalecki helped the Hornets respond to a Boerne touchdown by returning the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Dustin Toscano and Ricky Guzman each tallied 18 yards on two receptions.
Hornet quarterback Latham Walleck was able to complete 4 passes for 25 yards, and threw one interception. Christian Jones completed 2 passes for 18 yards for East Central. Nick Coleman was able to intercept a Boerne pass for a 33-yard return.
Boerne’s running game outpaced the Hornets by rushing for 327 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Chargers also connected on 14 passes, one for a touchdown.
East Central will travel to north this Friday, Sept. 2, to face New Braunfels Canyon. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
