Students receive UIL scholarships
Logan Albert Mills, Hunter Ian Haliscak, and Jordan Haley Sheppard, all graduates of La Vernia High School, and Faith Alexandria Ozer, a graduate of Fannindel High School, have each been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.
Logan and Faith received Spalding Sports Worldwide Scholarships. Jordan received the Ray von Rosenberg Oral Interpretation Scholarship and Hunter received the Clark Foundation Scholarship.
The scholarships are awarded to students who have participated in the University Interscholastic League Academic State Meet and who have compiled an outstanding record of academic and extracurricular achievement.
Logan competed in cross-examination debate at the 2010 and 2011 UIL Academic State Meets, where his team placed third in 2010. He also participated in UIL One-Act Play, football, golf, and track and field throughout his high school career. He plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in engineering.
Faith, who attended La Vernia High School for part of her high school career, was a member of the debate team. She competed in persuasive speaking and Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the 2011 UIL Academic State Meet, where she finished third individually in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Faith also was an active member and officer of the National Honor Society throughout her high school career. Faith plans to attend Trinity University and major in biomedical studies and international relations.
Hunter competed in cross-examination debate at the 2011 UIL Academic State Meet. He also participated in UIL mathematics, science, and band throughout his high school career. Hunter plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station and major in aerospace engineering.
Jordan competed in informative speaking at the 2011 UIL Academic State Meet and in prose interpretation at the 2009 UIL Academic State Meet. She also participated in UIL marching band and was a member of the National Honor Society throughout her high school career. Jordan plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos and major in nursing.
