East Central 8

New Braunfels Canyon 35

NEW BRAUNFELS -- After dropping their season opener to Boerne Champion last week, the East Central Hornets were looking to turn things around in their second game of the season. Unfortunately for East Central, the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars had other thoughts. Canyon played well on both sides of the ball Sept. 2, and served up a 35-8 loss for the Hornets.

The Canyon Cougar offense turned in a dominating performance, to say the least. New Braunfels scored five touchdowns, ran for more than 260 yards on 68 rushing attempts, by as many as 17 different ball carriers, and threw for nearly another 100 yards. On the flip side of that coin, the Hornets managed only a single touchdown, and tallied just 108 total yards on 21 rushing attempts and two completed passes.

The Cougars got things started in the first quarter of play as Skylar Nelson capped off the first New Braunfels drive with a 4-yard run into the end zone. Kyle Hoegenauer kicked the extra point, and the score was 7-0 in favor of the Cougars. Canyon then scored its second touchdown of the game with just over two minutes remaining in the first, as Bryce Dunman scampered into the end zone from 8 yards out. Following the point-after attempt, the Cougars led 14-0.

Touchdown No. 3 of the night would come at the 4:42 mark in the second quarter. George Williamson was the recipient this time, as he found running room from 3 yards out. Following another Hoegenauer kick, the Cougars enjoyed a 21-0 halftime advantage.

The Cougars continued to find success in the second half, as East Central continued with its struggles. Canyon dominated the game on the ground, but also got things done through the air, as Austin Day connected with Bryce Dunman for a 2-yard passing touchdown. Following the extra point, the score stood at 28-0.

New Braunfels’ final score of the game came at the 6:38 mark of the fourth quarter. Philip Shelton ran in from 12 yards out, and Hoegenauer remained perfect kicking the ball to make the score 35-0.

The Hornets finally got on the scoreboard with just over five minutes remaining in the game as Edwin Dearring ran in from 2 yards out. Christian Jones converted the 2-point play, and the final score stood at 35-8.

Hornet running back Chris Armstrong led the East Central offense with a nearly 10-yards-per-carry average, but only ran the ball seven times for 69 yards. Joe Clark had eight carries for 42 yards, and Dearring ran the ball six times for 16 yards. Latham Walleck completed two of 10 passing attempts for 17 yards. Kyle Ramon grabbed one of the tosses for 12 yards, and Kyle Padalecki snagged the other for 5 yards.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-2 on the year, and will need to turn things around in a hurry. East Central will be in the bright spotlight this week, as the Hornets host the Seguin Matadors Thursday, Sept. 8, in Hornet Stadium. The game will be televised as part of the Thursday Night Lights series.
