N-S Mustangs tame Bobcats
NIXON -- After a solid win during week zero to start the season, the Nixon-Smiley Mustang football team was looking for a bit more success last Friday in its home opener against Bloomington. The success didn’t come immediately for the Mustangs, but the team got rolling, and shut off the lights with a 33-3 win over the visiting Bobcats.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Mustangs drew first blood, as senior Joe Medina broke loose from 25 yards out. Alex Hernandez booted the extra point, and Nixon-Smiley led 7-0.
The Bobcats came right back, though, and put together a good drive deep into Nixon-Smiley territory. The Mustang defense stepped up big, however, and forced Bloomington to settle for a 27-yard field goal and a score of 7-3.
By this time, the Mustang offense was getting warmed up, and it took the team less than two minutes to drive down and score its second touchdown of the game, this time on a 35-yard sprint by junior Miguel Hernandez. The extra point was good, and Nixon-Smiley led 14-3 at the break.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure on both sides of the ball, and the offense padded its lead just four minutes into the third quarter. Senior Alex Hernandez took the ball and pounded his way in from 6 yards out. He added his own extra point, and Nixon-Smiley began to pull away from Bloomington with a 21-3 lead.
Following yet another good defensive stand by Nixon-Smiley, the offense returned to the field and wasted little time before scoring its fourth touchdown of the game. Senior quarterback Jaime Moreno connected with senior Robbie Mejia for a 45-yard touchdown. The point-after attempt was no good, but it hardly seemed to matter as the Mustangs enjoyed a 27-3 lead, an advantage they would carry into the final quarter of play.
The final touchdown of the game came at the 6:37 mark in the fourth quarter, as Miguel Hernandez took the ball and beat the defense across the goal line from 18 yards out. The extra point was no good, but the Mustangs held a 33-3 lead, a score that would prove final.
Medina led the offensive running game with 117 yards on 11 carries. Alex Hernandez added 99 yards on 15 carries, Miguel Hernandez had 84 yards on seven carries, and quarterback Moreno kept it three times for 39 yards. Moreno was also perfect throwing the ball, as he completed two of two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Mejia pulled in the touchdown and 35 yards, while sophomore Garrett Earlywine caught the other pass for 15 yards.
On defense, Alex Hernandez and Jacob Arevalo led the way with six tackles each, followed by Moreno, Damian Perez, Jared VanAuken, Michael Martinez, Dylan Robinson, and Mejia with four tackles apiece. Perez also picked off a Bobcat pass for an interception and return of 7 yards.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the year, and will travel to Yorktown this Friday, Sept. 9, to face the Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
