Jourdanton 28

Stockdale 22

STOCKDALE -- It was a wild night in Stockdale last Friday, as the Brahmas played host to the Jourdanton Indians. There was a crazy power outage that lasted about 30 minutes, and fans from both sides found themselves on an emotional roller coaster of sorts as the teams battled closely until the very bitter end. When things were all said and done, though, it was Jourdanton picking up the 28-22 win.

The first touchdown of the game came about midway through the first quarter, as Jourdanton’s Kye Burris broke loose from 20 yards out. The point-after kick was good, and the Indians led the Brahmas 7-0.

In the second quarter of play, the Indians increased their lead as Kenny Huschke found running room from 38 yards out, and brought the visiting fans to their feet as he outran the Stockdale defense to the end zone. Another good kick made it a 14-0 game with 9:56 still remaining in the half.

The Brahma offense finally got cranked up in the closing minutes of the half, as senior quarterback Colton West hooked up with senior receiver Cody Hastings for 9 yards and a touchdown. West booted the extra point, and the home crowd was breathing a little easier with the score now 14-7.

The Brahma defense turned things up a notch and found a way to put the ball back in the hands of the offense. The Stockdale offense wasted little time, ran its two-minute offense perfectly, and scored a second touchdown on another passing play from West to Hastings. This one went for 14 yards, and pulled the Brahmas to within a point. West then kicked the point-after, and the teams went into the locker rooms tied at 14-all.

The teams were each scoreless in the third quarter, but Jourdanton broke the tie with just under 10 minutes to play in the game as Aaron Lopez ran the ball in from 11 yards out. The extra point was good, and the Indians regained the lead at 21-14.

Stockdale has been pretty good throwing the ball this year, and the Brahma offense showed that again with 4:51 left to play as West hit fellow senior Trevor Baumann for a 65-yard touchdown. Baumann ran in the 2-point conversion, and Stockdale celebrated a 22-21 lead with just minutes to play in the game.

The Indians weren’t about to roll over, though, and Jourdanton fought its way back into Brahma territory. With 1:23 remaining in the game, Isais Cruz found an opening in the Stockdale defense and scampered 29 yards for the game’s final touchdown. The extra point was good, and the Indians left town with a 28-22 win.

West played well for Stockdale, though he felt pressure throughout the night. He completed 14 of 24 passing attempts for 215 yards and three touchdowns. He did throw one pick, too. Baumann was the team’s leading receiver with 92 yards on five catches. Hastings caught seven passes for 86 yards, and Dylan Dunn reeled in two for 37 yards. Baumann was also the team’s leading rusher, as he carried the ball 10 times for 63 yards. Matt Valadez had 38 yards on 10 carries.

With the loss, the Brahmas fall to 1-1 on the year. The team will travel to Shiner this week, where Stockdale will take on Shiner St. Paul. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
