Town East drops record-setting heartbreaker, 122-120

SAN ANTONIO -- In the world of six-man football, things are a little different. The scores tend to be higher, and the action is a bit faster. Despite putting only six men on the field at a time, players often play both offense and defense, and by the end of the night, the athletes are completely “gassed.” But when your game lasts more than four hours and boasts a combined score of 242 points, your athletes find themselves completely exhausted, and this was the case after Town East’s narrow 122-120 loss to The Winston last Friday night.
Town East Head Coach Robert Davis wasn’t upset, though. In fact, he was quite proud of his team.
“Last year, this team beat us 85-38,” he said. “They have the best running back in the state, and while he only comes in and plays on offense, my kids play on both sides of the ball.”
Davis, who made a Saturday morning telephone call to the Wilson County News, said he wasn’t even sure who scored what at that point. Due to limited staff, Davis generally generates his statistics after the games, by watching game film. Unfortunately for him, this particular game ran over four hours and ate up all the memory on the team’s video camera in the first half alone.
To put things in perspective, you have to consider that each team scored somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 touchdowns. The combined points total of 242 points shattered the old record of 218.
“Of course it would have been nice to win, but I’m proud of how my kids played,” Davis said. “Winston is a much larger school with more kids. They have enough players to put some on offense and some on defense, while my guys have to play the whole game.
“We were trailing 70-54 at the half, and I told my kids they were still in this game,” he said. “To be able to hang with them the way we did, I was really happy about that. It showed we are a pretty salty team.”
Town East freshman Dante Johnson had a tremendous game for the Eagles, as he ran for somewhere north of 300 yards. Davis said he ran in eight touchdowns and threw another two. Drevion Williams also had a fantastic game for Town East, as he scored seven touchdowns, running six in from scrimmage and taking another back following a kickoff.
“These kids worked so hard,” Davis said. “I couldn’t have asked for more. They were cramping in the first quarter, but they all went out and played hard all night.”
In addition to the new combined points record, the score was a new school high, as well. Davis said the Eagles’ previous points record was 75, and that mark was clearly shattered at 120 points.
The Town East Eagles will play their next game this Saturday, Sept. 10, at Corpus Christi Annapolis. Davis said he and his team are looking forward to the game, and he expects the team’s remarkable efforts against Winston to help serve as motivation for what the team can achieve.
