LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Bears played host to the Canyon Lake Hawks for the season opener at Bear Stadium. Although the Bears put up a tough fight, the Hawks came out on top with a 34-23 win.
The first quarter started off with the Bears receiving and after slowly gaining yardage, Landon Richter made the first big play of the night with a 30-yard run, taking the Bears to the Hawk 15-yard line. The Bears were unable to make it into the end zone, and with a failed field goal attempt on fourth down, the Hawks took over on offense. The Bear defense put up a tough fight, but little by little, the Hawks made it down the field after several first downs and ended up on the Bear 5-yard line. The Hawks ran it in for the first touchdown of the night and with the extra point, put the game at 7-0.
The Bears kicked it up a notch in the second quarter when Jose Sahagun completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Grubb. Alec Dews kicked the extra point, tying the game 7-7 early in the quarter.
After failed scoring attempts by both teams, the Hawks once again had possession of the ball. The Bears’ Aaron Grubb made several tackles during the Hawks’ running game, but after a completed 32-yard pass, the Hawks ran the ball in one more yard to claim their second touchdown of the game. With the extra point, the Hawks were again in the lead 14-7.
The Bears were hit hard at the end of the first half with two consecutive sacks from the Hawks’ defense. The Bears were unable to make it into the end zone and the first half ended with the Hawks up 14-7.
The Hawks weren’t slowing down for the beginning of the second half and scored right off the bat with a 44-yard touchdown pass and extra-point kick, bringing the Hawks up to a 21-7 lead. The Bears closed the gap a bit after a 13-yard run by Vince Gill gave the Bears their second touchdown of the night. A 2-point conversion by Jake Wiatrek brought the score to 21-15.
The fourth quarter brought an immediate touchdown for the Hawks, as Zach Henshaw broke through several tackles on a 30-yard run to put the ball in the end zone. Their 2-point conversion attempt was incomplete, and the score was 27-15 at the beginning of the fourth.
The Hawks kept up their momentum in the fourth quarter with another touchdown on a 5-yard run from Henshaw, bringing the score to 34-15 with the extra point. The Bears continued to fight to the end, and with just 46 seconds left in the game, Levi Andrews scored on an 8-yard pass from Sahagun. Grubb then ran in the 2-point conversion.
With little time left, the Hawks claimed the game at Bear Stadium with a 34-23 win over the Bears.
Landon Richter was the Bears’ leading rusher with 106 yards. Grubb led the Bears’ receiving game with 89 yards, followed closely by Kenny Moehrig with 82 yards, Josh Rutledge with 24 yards, Levi Andrews with 17 yards, and Vince Gill with 9.
The Bears will play in Giddings on Friday, Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
