1934-2011

Opal Jean Wehmeyer Webster, 76, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, in her home in Helotes, Texas, surrounded by family. She was born Nov. 2, 1934, to Charles and Welma Wehmeyer in Denhawken.

She often told stories of her childhood growing up on a farm, picking cotton, driving a John Deere, and milking cows. She was crowned Miss Farm Bureau in the early ’50s, earning 25 silver dollars for the honor.

After graduating from Stockdale High School in 1951, she moved to San Antonio. She married Gene Webster in 1953 and began her 40-year career at USAA. Upon retirement in 1993, she had worked at USAA longer than the CEO.

In 1965, she and Gene began a family. In 1989, she became a proud Grammy. Opal was very involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was a founder and past president of Helotes Little League, attending stock shows and rodeos to see her children and grandchildren show and perform.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Gene Webster; her parents; her brother, Mose Wehmeyer; her sister, Joyce Deer; her brother-in-law, Larry Sisler; and a nephew, Charles William Wehmeyer III.

Opal is survived by her children, Laurie Powell and husband Len, Jason Webster and wife Katie, and Jeni Webster and husband Jimmy La Course; grandchildren Erin and Renessa Sanders, Gabriel King, Jordan, Summer, and Autumn Webster, and Jaxon Webster. Also surviving are her sister, Kathryn Sisler; brother-in-law Keith Deer; sister-in-law Ella May Calloway; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the Zion Lutheran Church in San Antonio.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that if you smoke, try quitting at least one more time.
