Stockdale 34

Shiner St. Paul 38

SHINER -- Stockdale knocked off one state championship team when the Brahmas beat the Falls City Beavers to open their 2011 season, but couldn’t do it again in Shiner, as the Brahmas fell to the Cardinals, 38-34, in a close contest.

The Cardinals struck first in the game, as Martin Kennedy capped off a St. Paul drive in the first quarter with a short run from 4 yards out. The point-after kick was good, and the Cardinals led 7-0 with 5:36 to play in the first.

The Brahmas came back right away, though, and soon found themselves deep in St. Paul territory. Matt Valadez took the ball from the Cardinal 8-yard line, and ran into the end zone for a Brahma touchdown. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score stood at 7-6 with about three minutes to play in the quarter.

Four minutes into the second quarter, Shiner St. Paul struck again, this time through the air, as Dakota Kresta connected with Adam Hollenbach for a 16-yard touchdown strike. The kick was no good, but the Cardinals had extended their lead to 13-6 with 8:15 remaining in the half.

As in the first quarter, the Brahmas once again responded to the Cardinal touchdown with one of their own. Trevor Baumann punched the ball in from a yard out to make it a 13-12 game, and then Cody Hastings ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Brahmas a 14-13 advantage at the break.

St. Paul came out of halftime ready to work, and the team scored its third touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run by Hollenbach. The 2-point attempt was stopped short by Stockdale, and the score stood at 19-14 in favor of the Cardinals. St. Paul then added a little insurance at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter, as Kresta hit Justin Natal for a completion and a 17-yard touchdown. St. Paul continued to struggle with the extra point, but the 6 for the touchdown gave the Cardinals a 25-14 lead.

Stockdale stormed down the field on its next possession, and Valadez scored his second touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run from scrimmage. The 2-point attempt was stopped, and the score stood at 25-20 in favor of the hometown team.

As the teams moved into the final quarter, it seemed like whichever team had the ball at the end would be the team to win.

St. Paul had the ball to start the fourth quarter, and the Cardinals went back to the air as Kresta connected with Natal for a 39-yard touchdown. Still no extra point for Shiner, and the score was 31-20 with 10:47 to play in the game.

As they have done all year, the Brahmas responded well. Following the kickoff, Baumann wasted little time before finding a seam in the Cardinal defense and exploiting it for 66 yards and a Brahma touchdown. Colton West ran in the 2-point conversion, and the score was 31-28 with 10:32 to play in the game.

Kresta and the Cardinal offense moved back down the field on their next possession, and Kresta hit Hollenbach from 3 yards out for another touchdown. The extra-point kick was good for the first time on the night, and the Cardinals celebrated at 10-point lead at 38-28 with 8:31 remaining on the game clock.

Stockdale moved the ball well on its next possession, and Valadez capped off the drive with a 7-yard run into the end zone. The 2-point attempt failed, and the score stood at 38-34 with more than five minutes still remaining in the game. Stockdale needed to get the ball back and score once more, but the Cardinals were too much for the Brahmas, and held the visiting team at bay. As the final buzzer sounded, it was Shiner St. Paul with the win, 38-34.

Baumann led the Stockdale offense with 256 yards on 24 carries. Valadez ran the ball nine times for 57 yards, and West had eight carries for 26 yards. West completed one of five passing attempts, and Hastings pulled the one completion down for 27 yards. The Brahmas punted the ball just once, but lost two fumbles in the game and were penalized six times for 45 yards.

The loss on the road drops the Brahmas to 1-2 on the year. Stockdale will be back at home this Friday, Sept. 16, as they host Odem. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Russell Field.
