La Vernia 7

Giddings 45

GIDDINGS -- After dropping their season opener a week before to Canyon Lake, the La Vernia Bears were looking for a better showing on the road against the Giddings Buffaloes. It was not to be, however, as Giddings picked the Bears apart and sent La Vernia packing with a 45-7 loss.

The Buffaloes scored their first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Joseph Glenn. Glenn then scored his second touchdown of the night on an 86-yard run, and the Buffaloes led the Bears 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Giddings scored on another 1-yard touchdown run from Glenn, and added a 30-yard field goal off the foot of Michael Rangel. When the clock expired on the first half of play, it was all Giddings, as the Buffaloes held a 24-0 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Giddings added to its lead with a 17-yard touchdown run by Jackie Wade. Deon Hickey then got in on the action and scored on a run of 14 yards. Rangel remained perfect kicking the ball, and Giddings increased its lead to 38-0 with 2:02 to play in the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Bears found something to cheer about as quarterback Jose Sahagun connected with Aaron Grubb for 67 yards and a touchdown. Alec Dews kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 38-7.

One minute later, the Buffaloes flexed their collective muscle again, as Ocean Johnson ran 43 yards for Giddings’ sixth touchdown of the night. Rangel’s kick was good to make the score 45-7, a mark that would prove final.

The Giddings running game produced 335 yards on 41 carries, while La Vernia was held to 19 yards on 27 carries. The Bears did complete four of eight passes for 88 yards. La Vernia managed just three first downs throughout the game, and were forced to punt the ball seven times. The Bears were also penalized four times for 50 yards.

Grubb ran the ball 12 times for 45 yards, and Erik Schweers ran four times for 10 yards, but the pressure put on Sahagun at quarterback created a loss of 34 total yards. Grubb pulled in three of Sahagun’s four passes for 83 yards and the touchdown, and Kenny Moehrig caught the other for 5 yards.

The Bears are now 0-2 on the year, and will be looking for a win as they travel to Wimberley this Friday, Sept. 16, to face the Texans. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
