JV Tigers earn pair of wins

FLORESVILLE -- After a game one loss, the Floresville High School junior varsity football team is on a roll, and has won its last two games.

After falling to Highlands, the JV Tigers earned a 28-6 win over Lanier. The Tiger defense started the game off with a big play by Gilbert Ortiz, as he returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown. Near the end of the half, the Tigers were able to take advantage of a good run by Vernon Marsh, and with seven seconds left, the Tigers scored on a play reminiscent of “the catch,” as Marsh hit Tim Muenzler for a 12-yard touchdown.

The second half was dominated by the Tigers with some big runs and a score by Cesar Hernandez. Marcus Avila also got into the end zone for the Tigers, and Aaron Balles was perfect kicking extra points.

The Tiger defense, led by Josh Vasquez, Daniel Ramirez, Cruz De Hoyos, Mark Livesay, Dustin McDonald, and Nick Trevino, played physical all night as they pounded the Lanier offense. The offensive line of Blake Popham, Sam Handowski, Larry Guerrero, Vasquez, Luke Clements, Muenzler, and Zach Frantz also played great all night.

With a 1-1 record, the Tiger JV team played Brackenridge last week, and earned a hard-fought 3-0 victory.

The Tiger defense, led by Ramirez and McDonald’s fumble recoveries, dominated the entire game and never allowed the Eagle offense to get close to scoring. Other big-time players for the defense included De Hoyos, Nick Gomez, Handowski, Vasquez, Robert Hammon, Anthony Gonzales, Livesay, Marsh, and Aaron Laskowski.

Offensively, the Tigers moved the ball with great running from Hernandez behind the blocking of Clements, Popham, Handowski, Guerrero, and Vasquez. Unfortunately, turnovers kept the Tigers from getting in the end zone, but with just over a minute to go, the Tigers drove down to the 3-yard line, where they lined up for a game-winning field goal, and Balles nailed it right down the center to give the Tigers the win.
