Poth 22

George West 21

GEORGE WEST -- After topping the George West Longhorns by a point last Friday night, the Poth Pirate football team earned another narrow win, and remains as the area’s only unbeaten team of 2011.

It was Poth that drew first blood down in George West, as Phillip Garza ran the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out. Braden Lyssy then kicked the extra point, and the Pirates led 7-0 in the first quarter.

The Longhorns came back in the second quarter, and scored their first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Brady Jones. The point-after attempt was no good, and Poth held a 7-6 lead -- a single point that would eventually make the difference in the game.

Poth fought hard throughout the first half, and Garza found some running room for his second touchdown of the game. This run was good for 4 yards, and Garza also ran in a 2-point conversion to give Poth a 15-6 lead at halftime.

It’s unclear what conversations may have taken place in the Longhorns’ locker room, but whatever was said clearly worked. George West came out strong in the third quarter and kept Poth out of the end zone, while finding it twice themselves.

The first touchdown of the second half came on a 4-yard run by Jones. Jessie Haros kicked the extra point, and the score was 15-13 in favor of the Pirates. George West then took its first lead of the game, as Enrique Nieto scored on a 2-yard run. Jones then ran in the 2-point conversion, and the score was 21-15 in favor of George West.

The Poth passing game had been working well throughout the evening, and it served the team once again in the fourth quarter, as Lyssy connected with Antonio Cantu for an 11-yard touchdown. The score tied things at 21-21, and the Pirates set up for the extra point. Lyssy lined up his kick, and booted it through the uprights, giving the Pirates a 22-21 advantage -- a lead that would hold up until the clock expired.

The Pirates hit George West with a fairly balanced attack, running the ball 28 times for 87 yards, and throwing the ball 20 times for 11 completions and 255 yards. Braden Lyssy led the ground game with 52 yards on 12 carries, while Garza ran the ball 13 times for 35 yards. Zach Lyssy was Poth’s leading receiver with 111 yards on five catches, Cantu had 101 yards on three grabs, and Garza reeled in another three catches for 43 yards.

The Poth Pirates improve to 3-0 on the year, and will be back at home this Friday, Sept. 16, to face Natalia. Kickoff at Jack Lane Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
