Tigers fall at home to Brackenridge Eagles
The Tiger defense closes in on a Brackenridge running back. The Tiger defense kept Floresville in the game, although they eventually fell to the Eagles, 21-13.
FLORESVILLE -- It was another close game for the Floresville Tiger football team as it hosted the Brackenridge Eagles Sept. 9, but in the end, it was the Eagles who returned to San Antonio with a 21-13 win.
Much like the first game played at Eschenburg Field this year, it didn’t take long for the scoreboard to light up. But unlike the first game, it wasn’t the Tigers who were scoring this time. The first touchdown of the game came just 16 seconds into regulation as Brackenridge quarterback Anthony Garza connected with Kenneth May for a 67-yard touchdown strike. Troy Mathis kicked the extra point, and it was 7-0 very early on.
The Tiger defense provided some excitement for the home crowd as the Eagles lined up for a field goal attempt and the Tigers came up with the block. The ball was returned about 60 yards, but after some discussion by the officials, the ball came back into Floresville territory.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Floresville found its way onto the board, as sophomore running back Hector Villegas capped off a solid Floresville drive with a 3-yard run into the end zone. Estevan Mireles kicked the extra point, and the game was tied at 7-7 with 11:02 to play in the half.
Play went back and forth throughout the second, and the Tiger defense came up with a big interception and runback, but another penalty backed the Floresville offense deep into its own territory.
Brackenridge regained possession in the closing minutes of the half, and the Eagles found their way into the end zone on another good passing play, as Garza completed a pass to Montae Whorton, who took it in for a 32-yard touchdown with 1:09 remaining. The kick by Mathis was good, and the Eagles led 14-7 at the half.
After a bit of a stalemate to start the second half, Brackenridge scored its third passing touchdown of the game with 1:14 remaining in the third. Garza threw the ball to May, and the catch was good for 27 yards and 6 points. Mathis booted the extra point to make it 21-7, and it was clear Floresville needed to do something quickly to get back in the game.
The Tigers moved the ball well, and found the end zone one final time, as Villegas carried it in from 3 yards out. The extra-point attempt failed, and the score stood at 21-13. Neither team scored again, and Brackenridge left Floresville with the victory.
The Eagles had a balanced offensive attack with 133 rushing yards on 29 carries and 205 passing yards and three touchdowns on 23 attempts.
For Floresville, the Tigers managed 75 yards through the air on six completions by quarterback Colby Shodrock. Floresville ran the ball 39 times for 121 yards total, though Villegas ran for 137 on his own. The negative yards charged to Shodrock as he was taken down by the Eagle defense in the backfield worked against the team’s total. John Handowski also ran the ball twice for 18 yards. Matthew Crockett was the leading receiver with 31 yards, followed by Cory Schaeffer with 21 yards, Dominique DeWalt with 15, and Jacob Flores with 8 yards.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-2 on the year, and will be back on the road this week as they travel to South San High School to play the Bobcats. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
