East Central 49
EAST CENTRAL -- Coming into last Friday night’s game, the third of the year for East Central, the Hornets were still looking for their first win. Both East Central and Seguin were winless to start the game, and only one was going to come out victorious. East Central’s running game scored often, and led the Hornets to a 49-7 victory.
Early in the game, victory wasn’t assured, however.
East Central quarterback Latham Walleck connected to Kyle Padalecki in the first quarter for the first Hornet touchdown of the night. Blayne Sells kicked the extra point, and the Hornets led 7-0. Before the first quarter was over, though, Seguin got on the board as Ray Hunter scored on a 15-yard run, and Edgar Villamil kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
The second quarter would see the Hornets take a commanding lead, and the breakout star of the game was tailback Joe Clark.
Clark’s first touchdown broke the deadlock with an agile 35-yard run that weaved through Seguin’s defense. Kyle Ramon then connected with Lyle Howland for a 2-point conversion, and the Hornets led 15-7. Later, Edwin Dearring would make an end-run around the Seguin defensive line for another touchdown, this one for 9 yards. Ramon then connected with Clark off a high snap for another 2-point conversion, and the score stood at 23-7.
With time winding down in the half, the Matador defense came up with a big interception to stop a Hornet drive, but then watched the opportunity slip by one play later as East Central junior safety Austin Jupe intercepted the ball and returned it for an 85-yard touchdown to put the Hornets up 29-7. Sells kicked the extra point, and East Central took a 30-7 lead into the second half.
Seguin had a deep deficit to overcome in the second half, but try as they might, the Matadors were simply unable to shut down the Hornet running game. On a winning drive that saw backup quarterback Jeremy Jones make an 18-yard run, Braden Lowak scored on fourth-and-goal with 3:58 left in the third. After missing the extra point, the score stood at 36-7 in favor of East Central.
The fourth quarter would assure an East Central victory. Seguin made an effort to score, but had their drive stopped short after failing to convert on fourth down with 11:40 still remaining in the game. This gave the Hornets possession, and delivered one of the game’s biggest highlights, as Clark ran 74 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The score helped cement an already-commanding lead at 42-7. Once again, the extra point would not materialize, but it was of no consequence because of the significant lead.
With 7:25 left in the game, the final points would be put up on the board by Jones with a run of 41 yards. Sells kicked the extra point, and the final score stood at 49-7.
Clark led a total of 12 East Central runners to more than 500 yards on the ground with 187 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Dearring ran nine times for 65 yards and a touchdown, and Chris Armstrong, who struggled with an injury, ran 12 times for 63 yards before getting some rest. Also running the ball for the Hornets were Walleck, Lowak, Padalecki, Jeremy Jones, Orlando Acevado, Dustin Toscano, Christian Jones, Matthew Rodriguez, and Justin Organ.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-2 on the year, and remain a perfect 3-0 while playing on television’s Thursday Night Lights. East Central’s next game will be this Friday, Sept. 16, as the Hornets host the Johnson Jaguars. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
