La Vernia 6

Wimberley 49

WIMBERLEY -- It’s been a tough football season for the La Vernia Bears in 2011, and the Wimberley Texans didn’t make things any better for the Bears last Friday. Wimberley dominated the game from start to finish, and handed La Vernia its third loss of the season by the score of 49-6.

The Texans scored on their first possession of the game, as Brady Lambert connected with Brennen Blakemore for a 29-yard touchdown. The duo reconnected later in the first quarter for 80 yards and the score, and Wimberley held a 14-0 lead after one.

Lambert connected with Trinity Wilson for 27 yards and a touchdown early in the second quarter, and Wilson ran in from 3 yards out late in the first half for his second touchdown of the game. As the teams broke for halftime, it was Wimberley ahead of La Vernia, 28-0.

After a scoreless third quarter of play, Wilson broke loose from 26 yards out for the Texans’ fifth touchdown of the night. Cameron Morris ran in from 11 yards out for Wimberley, and the score stood at 42-0 with six minutes to play in the game.

The Bears got rolling from there, using three minutes to drive into Texan territory and score on a 15-yard run from Vince Gill. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score stood at 42-6.

The Texans weren’t quite finished, though, as Kolby Kelley scored on a 21-yard run seconds after the La Vernia touchdown. When the clock finally expired in regulation, it was Wimberley with a dominating win, 49-6.

During the game, Gill led the Bear offensive running game with 70 yards on eight carries, followed by Erroll Warren with 30 yards and Landon Richter with another 18. Conner Carnes carried the ball one time for 5 yards, and Jose Sahagun was charged with a loss of 13 yards on seven carries, due in large part to the pressure defense of the Texans.

Sahagun completed five of 15 passing attempts for 40 yards, 15 of which went to Richter, and 13 to Aaron Grubb. Kenny Moehrig and Mykal Joyce each caught a pass for 4 yards and 6 yards, respectively.

The loss drops the Bears to 0-3 on the year. La Vernia will face Bandera at home this Friday, Sept. 23, which will be the Bears’ final non-district game of the season. The action is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Bear Stadium.
