Explosive first half leads to Brahma victory
STOCKDALE -- With a balanced offensive attack that included 307 yards rushing and 197 yards passing, the Stockdale Brahmas made easy work of the Odem Owls last Friday and picked up a 49-28 victory at Bobby Russell Field.
Stockdale scored its first touchdown of the game on a 21-yard passing play from senior quarterback Colton West to fellow senior Trevor Baumann, and Cody Hastings scored on the 2-point conversion. A couple minutes later, West scored on a 1-yard touchdown and then kicked the extra point. Odem was able to hang with the Brahmas during the first quarter, though, as the teams moved into the second 12-minute stanza with the score standing at 15-14 in favor of the Brahmas.
In the second quarter, it was all Stockdale. The Brahma defense held Odem from the end zone, while the offense added three additional touchdowns to the board. West broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run with 10:54 remaining in the half, and then scored from 10 yards out with 8:08 to play in the second quarter. Matt Valadez also got in on the first-half scoring barrage, as he ran in from the 9-yard line with 39 seconds left on the clock. West kicked two of the three extra-point attempts, and the Brahmas took a 35-14 lead into the locker room.
West scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter of play, and Baumann scored his second touchdown of the night with 5:29 to play in the fourth quarter. West kicked both extra points to give the Brahmas 49 points on the night. Odem was able to score twice in the second half, as well, but it wasn’t enough to put the Owls back in contention, and the final score stood at 49-28.
Baumann led the Brahma rushing attack with 120 yards on 14 carries, followed by West with 103 yards on 10 carries. Valadez ran six times for 58 yards, Dustin Mosier ran for 11 yards, Darion McMahan had 9, Josh Vela had 5 yards, and Hunter Peridolla carried the ball once for a yard.
West completed 9 of 11 passing attempts for nearly 200 yards. Valadez caught two passes for 85 yards to lead the Brahma receiving corps, Baumann reeled in three passes for 52 yards, Hastings caught three passes for 34 yards, and Dylan Dunn caught a pass that was good for 26.
With the victory, the Brahmas improve to 2-2 on the year, but will face their biggest challenge so far this season as they travel to Poth to face the unbeaten Pirates. The heated rivalry will also serve as the first District 14-2A game of the year for each team. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jack Lane Stadium.
