Nixon-Smiley 20

Sacred Heart 35

HALLETTSVILLE -- Following the 2-0 start to their season, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs have been on a bit of a slide, falling to York-town back on the 9th, and then dropping another road game to Sacred Heart in Hallettsville. The Indians put the Mustangs in a hole early, and then maintained enough pressure to hold Nixon-Smiley, and to pick up the 35-20 victory.

The first touchdown of the game came less than a minute into the contest, as the Indians broke loose on a 65-yard touchdown run. The point-after attempt was no good, but Sacred Heart led it 6-0.

Early in the second quarter of play, the Indians struck again, this time on an 85-yard run. The 2-point con-version was good, and Sacred Heart led 14-0 with 8:26 remaining in the half. The Indians added to their lead with just under three minutes to play as they scored on an 18-yard pass and catch. The point-after kick was good, and Sacred Heart took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Nixon-Smiley got on the board in the third quarter as Alex Hernandez polished off a Mustang touchdown drive with a 6-yard run into the end zone. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score stood at 21-6 with 7:40 to play in the third.

While Mustang Head Coach Carlton McKinney had to be pleased by the touchdown, he couldn’t have been pleased with what happened next, as the Indians took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 80 yards for another Sacred Heart touchdown. The extra point made the score 28-6.

The Mustangs put another good drive together after that, however, and with 4:54 to play in the third, Jared VanAuken punched it in from a yard out. The point-after was no good, and the score stood at 28-12 in favor of Sacred Heart.

In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, the Indians put a bit more insurance on the scoreboard as they scored on a 6-yard run. The kick made it 35-12 with 3:52 to play in the game.

Nixon-Smiley got the ball and had enough time to score on a 1-yard run by Jaime Moreno. Alex Hernandez ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 20-point total, but time had expired, and the final score stood at 35-20.

The Mustangs earned 265 yards of total offense in the losing effort, running 54 times for 220 yards, and passing for another 45. VanAuken led all Nixon-Smiley runners with 103 yards on 25 carries, followed by Alex Hernandez with 55 yards, Miguel Hernandez with 46 yards, and Moreno with 16. Miguel Hernandez caught one pass for 20 yards, Robby Mejia pulled in two for 13 yards, and Damian Perez reeled one in for 12 yards.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 2-2 on year, and wraps up the team’s non-district portion of the schedule. Nixon-Smiley will continue its road trip this week, as the Mustangs travel to Dilley to take on the Wolves in their first District 14-2A game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
