East Central FFA’ers receive state scholarships

Three members of the East Central FFA chapter were awarded scholarships during the 83rd annual Texas FFA Convention, held July 11-15 in Lubbock.

Heather Kosub was awarded a $10,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Dick Wallrath Foundation. She also received the San Antonio School Tours Scholarship.

Heather was awarded for her qualifications in academic achievement, leadership, SAE, FFA involvement, financial need, and personal interview. Heather has served as the East Central FFA president, was a member of both the national floriculture and nursery landscape teams, and has had a very active beef cattle program that included Limousin breeding heifers.

Jared Pieniazek was awarded a $16,000 scholarship, sponsored by the San Antonio Livestock Show, and the San Antonio School Tours Scholarship.

Jared was awarded for his qualifications in academic achievement, leadership, SAE, FFA involvement, financial need, and personal interview. He has served as an East Central FFA and Alamo District officer, and was a member of both the national meats and ag communication teams. Jared has had a very active project program that has included hogs, sheep, cattle, turkeys, and broilers. Jared’s Poultry Production Program was the all-state proficiency winner.

Shelbie Thames was awarded a $16,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Houston Livestock Show, and the Rural Youth Award Scholarship.

Shelbie was awarded for her qualifications in academic achievement, leadership, SAE, FFA involvement, financial need, and personal interview. Shelbie has served as an East Central FFA, Alamo District, and Area VII officers. She was a member of both the national floriculture and ag communication teams and has had a very active project program, including sheep and goats. Shelbie will continue to serve the state as a state FFA officer.

The 83rd annual Texas FFA Convention recorded more than 10,000 members and guests. Members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the week attending leadership workshops, participating in events and activities, being recognized for their achievements, and serving as the legislative body for the Texas FFA Association.
